Off on Vacation

Hello,

I am a week away from flying to Mexico City for 12 days, all 3 of us are Keto most days OMAD.
I have gone 3-4 pounds under goal the last 2-3 months and reset my goal by 2 more #'s for some leverage.

Looking for ideas for eating while there, not into too fancy places, just good authentic food and my son loves the street vendors.

What would you say is the number one food to have very sparingly while there ?
We are all very active and will be doing lots of walking.

Tricks to get back on track when we return ?? ( not that I plan on splurging out, too much ) just do not want to over due it, nor do I want to restrictive and miss experiencing new things either.
We arrive home 4 Pm Xmas day and I have Burger patties in the freezer and a friend will be picking up the fresh toppings for us. Than is Christmas dinner. Hopefully a start of ā€œback to normal maintenanceā€ or at worse strict Keto for a few weeks.

Just do not want to undue all our hard work (145# loss between the three of us )

Tacos are a fairly safe bet. Most will have a filling of mainly meat, and it’s easy to discard the tortilla.

Various egg dishes are fairly straightforward (egg plus tomato and/or other vegetables).

Places that specialize in or advertise a certain meat (e.g., beef or chicken) are pretty safe. The meat might be in a thin broth with vegetables, but it probably won’t be mixed with potato, rice, or other starches, as these will be served on the side.

Except for the tacos, I’d stay away from most dishes that aren’t specifically a meat, egg, or seafood dish. Things like stuffed peppers or tamales are very non-keto. The specialty sauces (e.g., salsa verde and mole) are full of mysterious ingredients and best avoided.

If I think of anything else I’ll let you know.

Nice. I love reading things like that. :slightly_smiling_face:

Lots of answers - it’s a broad arena. I’ll pick churros - a fried-dough dessert commonly with added sugar on the outside. Or, sweetened drinks, beer, etc. But from your post I don’t think you’re all that susceptible to the above, frankly. So… I think it’s just the basic ā€œcarbsā€ deal, and with street food they’re there in plenty - tortas, tacos, tlacoyos, quesadillas, camotes (sweet potatoes)… What are you going to do with most of them - just eat the filling? Tamales… maybe not too bad, depending on if carb-heavy foods are added to the filling.

Hey, you’ve done great, and you’re going to be on vacation. (That’s one way to look at it.) IMO it’s pretty tough to be strict with yourself and ā€˜stay on plan’ in this circumstance.

Getting back on track when you return: just return to your obviously-successful deal, whatever it is. Yeah, maybe it’s a shock to the system, etc., but it’s nothing like really ā€œstarting over.ā€ You got this.

I can’t help with the dishes but if you are anything like me, you go for starches as your carbs and definitely not simple sugars especially not the added kind. A tiny bit will be in savory dishes here and there but that is something a healthy body usually can handle well. I would think. And of course try focus on protein.
So know yourself and don’t ruin your time for a sweet treat that possibly isn’t even so good (most of us can’t handle normal sweets as they are too sweet to properly enjoy) - if you are that kind of person. Unless you are very very sure it’s worth it. Be careful and if you know you aren’t that type, be super careful. I understand you want to enjoy the cuisine, I would do that myself but my focus on savory foods, the less carby, the better. But we are all different and there are quite a few factors to consider when we make out decisions.

Nope, just do keto as before… Do you need tricks? I don’t. After ONE carby day I usually can’t help but run back to carnivore  It’s probably very individual and we need (or don’t need) our type of mind games to avoid prolonging carby times.
Oh have a very tempting keto food supply, of course, that helps  No wonder one goes for some carbs if you simply don’t HAVE enough wonderful keto food to eat. I need some serious carb poisoning to choose fast instead when I am hungry. One thing I learned on carnivore is that I must have enough good food with variety all the time. Hopeful thinking and ā€œtheoretically it should be more than enoughā€ isn’t enough for me but maybe it is for us, I can’t possibly know.

Such much fat-loss isn’t easy to undo unless you eat very wrong and much for a longer time. Though some people can gain frighteningly quickly. But not THAT quickly, 145 lbs is A LOT even for 3 people! Grats!
Even if you gain a little, you know how to lose, do it!

Maybe enjoy yourselves with good meals, but don’t have sweet drinks, or desserts. I think you may have an easier time getting back on track if you stay away from sugar.

Sorry, I thought this thread was about eating keto in Mexico. If it’s non-keto you want … If I were to do that, I’d have chile relleno from a street vendor, and cut-up fresh mango from a street vendor.

I can’t remember any baked goods or desserts that were worth having. As @VirginiaEdie suggested, it might be good to avoid these anyway. Most drinks (except coffee and bottled water) are heavily sugared.

(Kathy) #7

Thanks Yes the sauces may be a worry.

(Kathy) #8

Thanks, yes I do not want to be too anal, just a good balance and I’m not big on dessert and sweets. Although my son knows of a Keto Ice Cream shop near our condo… That I will give a try

(Kathy) #9

True, I really prefer to stick to my Maintenance Keto at home, I never feel deprived.
Thx

Yes about doing the best I can to pretty much stay close to Keto.
I know I can afford a few splurges on the trip.
But I will pick them wisely.

Cheers

If you’re not going to eat keto, then try mole poblano de guajalote, the national dish of Mexico. It’s turkey in a chocolate-chile sauce. Whatever it sounds like, it’s actually delicious. And not to bad with the carbs, because it’s not sweet, or at least shouldn’t be.

(Laurie) #12

Mole … a matter of opinion. I hated it. One could try it though!

Each region has its own variety, I believe. My cousin’s husband is from Mexico City, and his tastes great! At least, I think so.

Just enjoy yourself, unless you’re eating like a moron most of the weight gain on the scale will be nothing more than having topped off glycogen stores again, not fat. As long as you’re eating (more or less) like a sane person, it’s really not a huge deal. Mexico’s awesome, don’t screw yourself out of awesome food.

(Kathy) #15

Well we had a fantastic time!!
I did not deprive myself, if I wanted it I had it, awesome food, tending to mostly go with seafood.
Walking an average of 8-11 KM a day helped of course!
I came home with a weight loss of 3 pounds, my partner is a big dessert guy has brought home an extra 2 pounds, no big deal.
I was careful with sauces, not just because being too carby, but my digestion did not care for it. But I had pills for that LOL!

Happy New Year all

I’m glad you had a wonderful time. And lost weight too – bonus!

(Edith) #17

Thanks for reporting back! I’m glad it went well!

Thank you !!

Still maintaining the Bonus loss:blush:
