I am new to keto and about three weeks in. The changes i am noticing are noticeable and amazing and i am loving this way of eating. I am vegetarian but finding i can eat eggs and most fats enough to satisfy. I was coming off a very restricted plant based no fat diet which was making me sick. I have a little history of disordered eating and long story short i hadnt eaten anything remotely fat based in about 3 years.
So three weeks ago a added butter to my vegies and OMG it blew my mind! I am now obsessed with butter and have been having about 2 tblspoons each day. If i could i swear i would eat a block of it though. Is it normal to love it this much and am i going to die from a heart attack? I of couse am eating premium grass fed organic butter and have been getting fat from healthier things too like avocado’s, olives and organic coconut oil.
I find im not as hungry as previously but just love love butter. Wondering if anyone can relate or am i a weirdo?
Thankyou for your help and i have loved reading up on all the things in this forum.
Obsessed with Butter
Sounds to me like your body is screaming for some much needed nutrients! KCKO It’s all good.
2 whole tablespoons? That’s not exactly a huge amount of butter. LOL!!
Yes, I like real butter. I was the outcast in our family for a long time before I ever heard of keto because I wanted REAL butter and REAL cream and REAL cheese. Turns out that was a way better way to think than I had realized. Just had to lose the 4 pieces of bread I was putting the butter on. LOL!
Butter is also delicious when it’s “browned” or “burnt”. Gives a nice flavor over some veggies…
Quite normal to love love butter… and no, you don’t have to worry about heart attacks… plus I agree, 2 tbs doesn’t seem like very much to me, heck, I have that much at one meal!! (But do listen to your gut, it can be hard for someone coming off a more plant based diet to produce enough lipase for fat digestion, ACV helps!)
I dream about butter all the time. Last night I dreamt Kerrygold made different compound butters in single serve packs. I woke up hungry and excited to eat some butter.
Thankyou. You have put me at ease and makes me want to increase my intake a little! Loving this eating real food thing. I had ricotta and fetta last night and it was amazing! I have sour cream to try this week too.
This is the story of my life. Waking up excited because its almost time to eat. Hahahha. I am enjoying this way of eating though as im not as ravenous all the time.
Lol! Wait till you start frying bacon and saving the lard for cooking… You’re just in the starting gate.
Im a vegie but who knows. Never thought i would eat a stick of butter!! Life goals. hahahhaa
It’s really good stuff. I keep a package on the go in the refrigerator that’s just for “whittling” on - cutting off a piece anytime I want one.
You guys have made me sooo much better and normal. Something im totally not used to on the food front. Thankyou!
I was making scrambled eggs yesterday (with butter) . I had never tried straight butter but had heard people rave about it on the forums. So I cut off a thin slice, like a cheese slice, and ate it straight. It slowly dissolved in my mouth with its salty creaminess. So yummy. But so satisfying, it wasn’t like chocolate where you have to go back and eat it all. I could taste that yummy salt for hours later. Maybe I just need salt.
Consider yourself VERY lucky! There are days I need to up my fat macro and wish I could just eat a bit of butter to do it, which I’ve heard others, including 2KetoDudes, recommend. But I just don’t have the taste for it. I love it ON other things, but I can’t stomach the thought of just taking a bite. So recognize your good fortune, and enjoy!
I’ll see your tablespoons of butter, and raise you a couple shots of olive oil.
Enjoy those good fats!
Butter increase both LDL (the harmless large fluffy type) and HDL. I wouldn’t be too alarmed if you see increase in LDL as long as you avoid vegetable oil, refined carb and sugar which are associated with small dense LDL.
I tend to go for raw grassfed butter, but it’s not something everyone can get. If you have local cheesemaker, you can find something called whey butter which to me is a more delicious version of butter, but not for high heat cooking.
For low heat cooking, I like the flavor combination of butter and olive oil. For higher heat cooking, I prefer lard and coconut oil.
I love butter. I admit it seems a bit odd to simply snack on it, but it sure does taste good. What I love about this way of eating is that I don’t have to track my intake, because the fat is so satisfying I can trust my body to tell me when it’s had enough.
I (seriously) add butter to my cheese sometimes. Partly for the taste, partly for the nutrients (e.g. vitamin A, vitamin K2 (not a fantastic amount, but every little helps…), choline…).
+1 for raw (unpasteurised) grass-fed butter, if you can get it. (and unpasteurised cheese, if you can get it).
I like that or an olive spread/tampanade on my cheese! Good fats and tasty!
