I agree. I have stopped using the word “cheat” when I speak of having carbs. My good friend and I have started calling them super carb ups if we have them at all. I feel like people are so used to being “on a diet” that calling eating of carbs cheating is a part of that. I am trying to get away from that phrase and in my videos and blog posts I don’t use the word anymore.

A meta question:

What is the health benefit of getting bent about other people’s word choices for other people’s activities? Is there one? Do you feel better having vented?

I dislike the term, but if that’s how other people want to call either a failure to comply or a planned period off, it really doesn’t befront me none.

I literally logged on this morning to say the exact same thing!

Over the weekend we had a BBQ party at our house, with lots of friends, beautiful weather and amazing food and drinks.

Did I control myself? Yes…to a certain degree. Did I deprive myself from sharing an amazing meal with my closest friends? Absolutely not! I ate some cheese and crackers, I ate a small piece of chocolate loaf, I had a glass of wine…

Do I regret any of it? NOPE! I had a great time shared with great friends and I’m back on the Keto wagon this morning.

Its a word, who cares! Everyone interprets the word “cheat” differently! We all take accountability for what we put into our own bodies and if you wanna have a cheat day/meal then so be it! I have a "cheat"meal every now and then. I am perfectly aware of the choice I’m making and the consequences that could come with it and honestly for me it works, and yes I call it a “cheat” meal!

Cheating implies you’re getting closer to your goal with less effort. It’s the exact opposite, it’s sabotage whether you willingly make that choice or not.

I disagree - sometimes I need extra veggies or berries to keep my digestion on track. Rarely I get an overwhelming craving for milk so I have a glass. It’s not even every week. But I have had issues with diarrhea since I started the diet and have to listen to what my body needs at the moment.

Everyone has their own opinions which is perfectly fine however when someone’s opinion is coming off as putting people down for different choices is not ok. This is suppose to be a place to discuss things and support each other. Just because someone may feel strongly about a certain subject doesn’t mean that the ones who feel less strongly are any less.

The only thing this thread is about is the misappropriation of the word “cheat”. Words have an actual meaning regardless if whether you think they do or not. I don’t care if someone chooses to call themselves keto and eats carbs sometimes. That’s their choice. I just think calling it a “cheat” sounds dumb. Sorry if that bothers you.

To me, the word “cheat” implies that you aren’t the final authority of your own life. You’re worried about what The Doctor or Your Neighbor or Mommy or God will think of your activity, rather than being confident within yourself that you have made the right choice for you at this particular moment. Cheating as it applies to a spouse is an appropriate word because you should be somewhat responsible toward that person. But making a dietary choice is not breaking a social or moral contract. When it comes to diet, the worst you can say is that you cheated yourself.

If I hold to my rules (<30g net carbs, >120g protein), then days where I intentionally violate my rules is a cheat. I am cheating no one but myself and my plan, but it is a valid use of cheat, according to Hoyle… or at least the good folks at Merriam Webster, America’s Most Trusted Dictionary.

From a serious pedant, nothing but stress and heartbreak lies in the road of pedantry, grammar policing, comma patrols, spell checking folks, or really any type of Internet pedantry. Breath some, you’ll live longer. And ACM, Life Expectancy and Quality of Life Years are the only measures that matter in the end.

Ive been home all day with my sick toddler while my wife is at Cedar Point (roller coaster heaven). There have been two beers in my fridge since a party 2 months back. Im allowing myself deck beers tonight because Im out of whiskey and wine and I freaking deserve it. Call it whatever you want my feet will be up.

This is making the perfect the enemy of the good.

Compared to how I lived 2 years ago, my diet is exceptionally healthy. On average I probably “cheat” once every few weeks, and I hate the feeling afterwards enough to get back on the wagon.

Calling it “cheating” acknowledges that this isn’t how you want to live your life. It’s an exception to the rule. For instance, I went on a date tonight, and drank two glasses of red wine. That doesn’t mean I won’t KCKO tomorrow. The next thing I eat will be a 3-egg omelette at the bagel place (sans bagel) sometime after 2pm tomorrow.

Of course, if I was diabetic, heaven forbid, none of the above applies. There’s no excuse. And while I’m not the most carb-tolerant of people, there’s no question my body won’t go mental if I have a couple of glasses of wine, or if – once in a while – I buy some milk chocolate and cookies and Doritos and have a proper cheat night. My cousin is an amateur bodybuilder and swears by his cheat meal once a week.

Horses for courses.

@KHAN I agree 100% - and find the “cheat” analogy a tiresome perpetuation of the self-sabotaging dualistic/bipolar/addictive culture that I find great joy in reclaiming myself from.

Treating one’s self with conscious choice to a carby meal is not deceptive or manipulative - it’s mature and aware of potential downsides if one eats 200 grams carbs, etc.

Then again, some fat-adapted folks who easily do OMAD and it works for them, can apparently do well with more carbs in the one meal (Jason Fung MD talks about how Asians typically eat at least a cup of rice a day, but don’t eat all day long, etc).

What if there were no Cheaters, only Master Teachers???

(^ an ancient wisdom question, which can take various forms for particular kinds of unlearning or decolonization…)

Point is, that the more nourished ones brainz are, the easier it is to wake up to one’s life force and human potential. And if one is staying woken up - there’s no cheating, there’s just consciousness about our learning experiences in this brief and precious life of learning how to truly love.

To each their own, and live and let live - and - I’m on the side of knowing life wants to live, and if we let it, it’ll free us to flourish with the foods and thoughts that NOURISH. :sparkles: :avocado: :sparkles:

Please reread the OP. I was not making any observations at all about peoples choices. None.

I was hoping to create a light hearted [rant] to get others opinions. I see many other have tired of this as well. I also realize that it’s no big deal.

I just think the widespread use of the word “cheat” is misplaced. And it just sounds dumb. You’re not cheating, because there is no way to get away with it. You know the consequences, and choose to pay them.

I’m also a firm believer in not making perfect the enemy of good. :slight_smile:

It’s really “Periodic Carb intake for Metabolic Reasons". Nothing wrong with it, it’s not Evil. You just have to practice “Carb Awareness" which is nothing more than understanding the basic Science of what happens inside your body when you consume carbs, according to Types, Amounts, and Frequency. All this anti-carb dogma and preposterous “Virtue Shaming” is absurd, and is truly “Nutty Keto”…
