Now I'm pregnant

#1

I have been on keto for the past year-and-a-half and now I am pregnant why do I feel like I’m 10 months pregnant when I’m only 5 weeks in?

Is you body demanding more food? Are we talking fatigue? :cowboy_hat_face:

Congratulations! You can certainly still do Keto during pregnancies (search threads on here there are a few giving good information for this) and maybe upping your proteins and fats a bit will help you feel better? Morning sickness, feeling yucky is pretty normal for the first couple of months being pregnant though. Just think of the end result, having a lovely little baby to cuddle and love forever =).

Congratulations! Is this your first?

My body is definitely demanding more food. And I dont wanna eat bread and rice but my friends and family are telling me I have to. Not only that, its like I’m 5 weeks in I’m always hungry, I feel swollen like all the time. I can’t even hide it.

I mean my clothes still fit and no one can tell but my belly is already getting out there. Could it have anything with losing 65 lbs and then being pregnant?

#7

This is my 4th baby and I have never felt this way before.

Maybe you are having twins?! I had a 16 week miscarriage with twins (first pregnancy) and I looked really large already by then) which is why I thought of this.

The bloating could be an electrolyte imbalance. I’d try adding in a touch more salt and magnesium. Congrats and best of luck. You can likely up the carbs a touch (not high enough to kick you out of ketosis but with higher energy demands you can squeeze in 15-20g more for sure). I would eat whenever you’re hungry, at least in the beginning, and with enough protein and fat it should stabilize over time.

Oh my. I’m so sorry that happened, Susan :frowning:

Thank you, it was for my first pregnancy, and my children are almost 19,21, 25(girls) and the boys are 23 and 28 so it was a long time ago --it was hard at that time but I was blessed with 5 children =). I just thought I would mention it because I looked very pregnant soon on in that pregnancy, so I wondered if maybe she could be pregnant with more than one child was all.

Lily Nichols has a wonderful book on nutrition during pregnancy and there are highly worthwhile youtube clips of her discussing related topics. Check her material out for some solid science-based info. (And congratulations!) :baby_bottle:

Congratulations!! Do you think it’s because you lost the 65 lbs that you are noticing your body changes more than you did in the past? I remember the craving for bread and carbs, but mostly it was due to the 9 straight months of heartburn and trying to manage that. If you don’t want to eat them and feel good staying low carb stick with it.

You know what it might be be because I lost the 65 pounds that my body is changing drastically. And I am so used to fasting for 20 hours a day and then BAM! Change.

Thank you you all for great advice I’m going to dive in on some youtube and keep asking questions if I have them.
Thank you all and God Bless.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #15

You are building another human being, so you need plenty of protein for those little bones and organs, plus plenty of fat to fuel the process. You and your baby have absolutely no need for carbohydrate. Women have been having perfectly healthy babies for a couple of million years now, without necessarily eating any carbohydrate at all. The small amount of glucose that you and your little one need can be manufactured out of the protein you eat, so don’t worry about the carbs.

The one concern for pregnant and lactating women on a ketogenic diet is that you must not fast. Fasting runs the risk of putting you into a condition called “euglycaemic ketoacidosis” which, like diabetic ketoacidosis, can be fatal. Not to scare you, or anything, sorry! It’s simply that until you wean the baby, you are literally eating for two, so fasting is just not a good idea for now.
