Note to self: don't eat fat too close to bed

(eat more) #1

unless you want to be wide awake 4 hours later…

or maybe do if you stayed up past your bedtime and still have to get up early :joy:

(prob other factors involved…i’ll see if i want to test it after seeing how i feel later lol)

…I thought his was about dripping bactor nectar on the bed sheets or something - oh well, just carry on

I find I sleep better if I don’t eat for five or six hours before bed. I didn’t heed my own advice hence I am awake at 3am.

If I go to bed on a full stomach I have nightmares.

(eat more) #5

that too…and now i feel like total shit…like a hangover

i was going to soldier on…even got completely dressed for them gym and my body said eff that

so i amend for myself “eat if you’re hungry” to “…if you aren’t going to be sleeping soon”

:tired_face::sob:

Hey, you’re lucky if all you had was restlessness. My learning experience involved hunching over the porcelain god like a sorority girl.

Have you tried a teaspoon or two of raw honey, with the fat, before bed? That might give your brain enough glycemic energy to keep you asleep all night. I know Dave Asprey, the Bulletproof Exec, has spoken to this multiple times. Here’s his blog post on it.

Being on ketogenic diet and getting fat-adapted, the goal is to have the brain running predominantly on ketones and let the body make the remaining glucose via gluconeogenesis and adding honey would only interfere with that process even if it includes some fat to reduce the glycemic index.

@Aqua_chonk - i think the possibility of that still exists

@Mark_Bousquet - since starting keto i usually sleep like a champ…i think this was just a really dumb move on my part and i freaking knew better!
Asprey also recommends ice baths? no thanks! lol

of course this lesson is coming on a day that i don’t get to stay home ugh

maybe i’ll be water fasting before my brain has made peace with it

For a lot of people, a single teaspoon of raw honey (~6 g) won’t take them out of ketosis. They should check blood sugar and ketones the morning after to make sure. There’s also no rule that says every one should be in ketosis 100% of the time.

Yes, there is no keto rulebook, but these are the “Ketogenic Forums” and a better choice if someone were going hypoglycemic or hypoketotic in the middle of the night and experiencing sleep problems would be something like any nut butter such as almond butter.

Van attest to this u.u I’ve been tinkering with my carb amount after feeling super tired all of the 5 months I’ve been on Keto, and it’s working (upped from 20 g to 50 g), but last night was weeeeird… I’d had around 20 g carbs during the day, so I decided to eat a sugary treat (which I didn’t even enjoy, it was way too sweet) right before bed. Well, I went to sleep just fine, but woke up two hours after, thinking it was time to get up already, and with some very weird anxiety and general nervousness, like someone was out to get me. I guess if I hadn’t insisted on going back to sleep it would have been fine, 'cause I was full of energy, but it wasn’t pleasant

Doing this as a type 2 diabetic it would be counter to everything I’m doing to eat a spoonful of honey. Any curiousity I might have to measure the blood sugar effects pales into insignificance compared to concern/fear of how anti everything I’m doing this suggestion is. I’ll stick to not eating fat too close to bed.

Hot bath with epson’s salts and some camomile tea and I’m out like a light.

But I did eat a table spoon of coconut oil last night with my vitamins right before bed. I was feeling a bit drained (day three of a four day fast) and figured a little fat might help. No adverse effects here. Yet…

Yes, this has been happening to me lately and makes total sense. I had sleeping issues my entire life, so thought I was just going through a phase again, even though I’ve been sleeping so much better since I started Keto. Due to working late, I’ve been eating later the last couple of weeks and waking up after four hours wired and anxious with my head running in circles. I will adjust my eating again and see if that helps. I love this forum!

I’ve had this occur to me, too, but with specific brands of raw honey. I need to find the one again that I had good results with. Not all raw honey is equal!

I wasn’t suggesting the raw honey for any T2D sufferers. But then they probably shouldn’t be drinking Kombucha, either, eh?

I’ll stick to not eating fat too close to bed.

Personally, I find a Tbsp of C-8 fatty acids and a serving of collagen before bed helps me sleep well at night.

Thanks for the pre bedtime suggestion. Sorry, you lost me with the Kombucha reference? It’s not something I take.
