Not Losing No Ketosis

#1

Been doing Keto for over 2 weeks. I’m a young 75 and just want to lose some belly fat. Am I expecting too much much too fast? I lost the usual 5 lbs early on and nothing since. Checked my amount of ketosis and nothing. Any advice? Thanks Gordon

Ketosis is driven by how many (net) carbs you eat. Weight loss is driven by how much you eat.

Did you determine your macros and track what you eat (including weighing what you eat)?

It takes time to lose (or gain) a pound of fat (or muscle), even when eating less than you need. Especially if you don’t have a lot of weight to lose in the first place.

Yes…

Two weeks is way to soon to expect a low carb diet that results in ketosis to have much affect on your weight, or health in general.

Two months might show show some improvement… Two years will be better.

Gordon, welcome! If you can provide more information, perhaps we can give some helpful suggestions. First, you said you have been doing this for 2 weeks, but then lost only 5 pounds at the beginning. Losing 5 pounds in 2 weeks is decent! Sometimes people don’t lose weight because the body is recomposing it self with fat decreasing, but muscle and bone increasing. Second, you said that you checked your amount of ketosis, but didn’t say how. Are you using a blood meeter, breath meter, or urine sticks? Urine sticks are notoriously inaccurate and not a good measure; I would suggest a Keto Mojo blood meter. Third, can you tell us about what you are eating per day? Give us an example of what foods and how much. Fourth, are you able to provide some information about your current weight, height, and general body composition? A person who is 15 pounds overweight will have slower results than somebody 115 pounds overweight.

Short answer: Yes.

Longer answer: Keto is a long term metabolic normalization process, not a miracle diet. The normalization usually includes weight and body composition. But your eventual ‘normal’ may not be what you imagined or wished it to be. You really have no control over what fat your metabolism decides to utilize. If you’ve had your belly fat a long time, it will probably be the last to go. Stay sub-20 grams of carbs per day consistently and good things will happen. Otherwise they won’t. Best wishes from another young 75. :slightly_smiling_face:

2 weeks is almost nothing. And keto doesn’t guarantee fat-loss anyway even if you have more than minimal to lose, it just makes it easier most of the time, surely not for everyone. It matter what you eat too, I could massively overeat on keto choosing the wrong, not satiating items. Many people notice they don’t lose fat if they don’t eliminate certain things, dairy, sweeteners…

But you don’t need to think too much about it now. 2 weeks is barely any time. Get used to keto and you will see. It’s possible your satiating and hunger will change when you get fat adaptated and you get success afterwards. Or you need to eat even less carbs eventually. Who knows?
For know, stay on track, enjoy yourself and be a bit more patient.

It’s often way harder when we have little to lose. Especially if our energy need is smallish (compared to our appetite and hunger, at least). I see it in my family.
