Not in ketosis - take ketones?

(Sonia) #1

Hi,

I posted a few days ago about how to stay motivated. Been on keto for two years and now maintaining. I was snacking here and there and want to stop.

I’ve been doing egg fast since Monday to get rid of cravings. Doing well. No cravings at all and I feel great. No hunger. I feel energetic. Today is day 5.

I have a blood meter and I checked yesterday and today. Yesterday I was 0.3 and today I was 0.4. This is with strict diet for 5 days. All I had was eggs and coffee.

My question is should I just keep going naturally or should I take ketones? I have never taken them before. I see people taking it in their water but I don’t know if it really helps.

Advise?

Exogenous Ketone’s are amazing, but they don’t put you “into ketosis”, they just make you run on ketone’s, there’s a difference. 0.3-0.4 tells me there’s ketones there, what’s the prob? Screw the blood meter, just keep your diet right and it’ll all work out.

This is a question that a lot of people ask at some point. I realise we’ve all been trained by Facebook not to rely on the search function, but the KF search function works quite well. If you search on “not in ketosis” you are sure to turn up all the explanations for what is going on.

Hint: if you are not eating carbs and are still breathing in and out, then your liver is producing ketones and your organs are using them quite well.

No. Let your body do the work. Maybe stop the snacking in favor of more food when you’re on a regular meal.

You’re producing ketones that are being used as fuel rather than sitting unused in your blood, that’s all. Exogenous ketones will help you make expensive pee if that’s what you want.

Stop the snacking, make sure you’re eating enough when you have your meals, and focus on the long haul rather than five day gimmicks.

Your body is efficiently using ketones. After two years you are adapted so the ketones are going to fuel your body and not hanging around in your bloodstream.

If you want more ketones for greater mental clarity or to soothe anxiety, there are medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) to try. Coconut oil, for example.

Exogenous ketones would only be for the ‘high’.

Plenty of people will point out that the snacking is the thing to control. You’re on to that. Chasing blood ketones, though fun, is not a huge aim for someone 2 years in and at a maintenance stage. Congratulations on that.
