Non-keto vacation

#1

So, I made a serious push to get down below 180 lbs. before going on a week-long vacation to mexico. I hit 179.8 on the day before I left. This marked 50 lbs down since my highest and 30 lbs down since starting keto. I am passionate about food and was not going to stay keto while visiting a country with one of the most interesting and vibrant food cultures in the world. I still decided to stay relatively low-carb compared to my previous eating habits. I had
margaritas, tacos, tortillas, beans with lard(drool), rice, etc.
. Everything was great. I noticed a bit of bloating and there was a scale in the bathroom so i checked every couple of days or so. I ended up spiking at about 8 lbs up from when i left and when i got home i was about 6-7 up.

Good news is that I am back down to 181.4 in less than a week since returning. Bad news is the impulse to just grab carby foods. I’ve been eating a ton since I got back, and the weight is still coming off. Sort of like starting keto for the first time, but armed with knowledge and experience. All in all, a good experience and well worth taking the week to enjoy the culture and food. The important thing is when you get back to make sure you jump back into the good keto habits and get through that crappy combo of no longer being on vacation, jet-lag, and keto-flu asap.

I’m glad you enjoyed yourself, that’s what life is all about!

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #3

Mole poblano de guajalote (turkey in mole sauce) is a delicious keto dish, by the way. The chocolate in the mole is unsweetened.

I know that some variations of molé-negro from Oaxaca actually incorporate bread. But I’m not sure of the amounts or if it’s even a common ingredient. By all means, enjoy it, it’s fantastic. But if you notice anything weird keto-wise it might be that.

Good for you! I’m going to Mexico in March for 10 days . I just started Keto Jan17/19. I really want to try and stay on keto as best I can. Do you know what kind of oil they use to cook with, if the cream they use in their coffee is cream or milk? I usually drink it black but find the coffee their very strong. I love mamosa,s but they will be deadly.
