Non-Keto Daughter with Ketonix in Red

(Samuel Ashford) #1

Over the past month my daughter has registered in the red on the ketonix meter more than once. Tonight we hooked it up to the computer and she was in the red again with an 87.

She regularly eats a moderate to high carb diet. Definitely not nutritional ketosis. Today she had cookies, and some of the regular fare at my wife’s house. Later in the day, for Thanksgiving dinner, I prepared roast duck, some green veggies like steamed broccoli, and a low-carb high-fat cheesecake. That was basically it.

Any clues? I know the obvious first question might be, is the meter calibrated? Well, it is calibrated using the ketonix software. As to whether the meter is actually good and has no defects, I have no way of knowing that.

Anyway, if the meter is good, let’s assume it is, how do I interpret this? At the very least, it’s pretty interesting. She’s 14 years old, and it’s registering numbers that many of us adults are desperately trying to achieve. As for myself, I’m regularly am in the orange and occasionally in the red. This is regardless of time of day. And I eat a very strict ketogenic diet, so the science adds up for me, but is there any science to explain hers? Incidentally, her 15-year old brother (eating a very similar diet to hers) has tested also with the same meter and can’t get into orange.

Well, I’m interested in seeing what anybody has to say about this. And, of course, Happy Thanksgiving!

"They eat pizza, fries and drink beer, is the simple answer!! When you received your KETONIX, you are likely to test it all the time. When doing so, a normal reaction from others is to see if they are are burning a lot of fat (even if they don’t follow a low carbohydrate, high fat diet).

Eating carbohydrate rich food and looking for ketones does not make sense. The body does not produce that much ketones while there is available circulation carbohydrates, unless you have diabetes type 1 and have very high blood sugar values.

However, the KETONIX reading may be high on high carbohydrate diets, but that is not from ketones metabolism. It will be from the process of breaking down those carbohydrates. This process is done via bacteria, called probiotics in your gut. If too much of this bacteria could cause a slowdown of your metabolism. There are studies that connects the probiotics to obesity and other metabolic issues relating to brain chemistry.

So, use our KETONIX for the intended use. For example: If you eat pizza and drink a beer then look for ketones … you are not using it as intended."

Ketonix picks up on all the breath gases. Carbs = methane = high reading. It is one of the issues I took up with them actually and I got the standard “only test in intended use context” answer. However, one of the big sells is testing foods and their carb level and your tolerance so where exactly is that cut off point where it drops to show lowering acetone and then suddenly jumps because it is picking up on the methane? I don’t know the answer. If you really want to see it go nuts though give it a blow after half a bottle of wine!

I am guessing it has to do with metabolic speed (how the entire over all bio-system operates and under what circumstances?) and age differences!

e.g. high levels of DHEA (declines with age)?, high levels of Human Growth Hormone HGH?, low adrenal stress or cortisol levels?, low frequencies in insulin spiking?, low estrogen? So many other factors to consider (i.e. spontaneous Ketosis like state without manipulating or regulating dietary intake!)…

So therefore, is it not also possible for someone who is using the ketonix meter for purposes of measuring ketosis (“legit”) to get a false reading because of excess probiotic bacteria in the gut? It seems to me that we’re really not talking about the intention of using the meter. We’re simply talking about how to interpret the results of the meter test. So, could I not also assume that my diligent efforts toward nutritional ketosis with an orange reading consistently may not be nutritional ketosis, but actually just probiotic overgrowth?

Ok, so I learn something new every day. So, we are saying that the ketonix meter measures acetone, as I already understood, but also methane? So in other words, what we’re saying is that it is very possible to pick up false readings under different contexts? Or, better stated it can register “high” readings, yet those readings are not showing nutritional ketosis, but the presence of some other gas, from some other cause?

Yes it measures acetone, alcohol, methane, ammonia, probably more I have forgotten!

Hence blowing it through the roof with alcohol!

http://www.ketonix.co/products-setup-and-support/frequently-asked-questions/

“…The KETONIX is “under-representing” ketones. Is it working properly?..”

Under this header (above) it has this (below) to say in the last paragraph:

“…The ability to “get the last air out of the lungs” (which have the highest concentration) is different for everybody. It is therefore not meaningful to compare two different people’s readings. The reading is personal and should be used as an indicator of how lifestyle changes effects ketosis…”

Measuring blood ketones is much more accurate but expensive!

Yes, I’ve measured BHB with precision Xtra for years. Abbott should offer me stock in the company. I just really like the “free” feature of ketonix, as you said. Cheap.

Yes, I’m with you on the youth angle. It makes sense to me, except for the fact that my son, whose metabolism is like a runaway train (very athletic) and whose diet is very similar to my daughter’s, and who is very close in age, comes in at half the acetone level l.

BTW, thank you, Daisy. These are some things I didn’t fully realize about the ketonix meter!

Seems to be a waste of time and money! Test blood ketones?

Neither did I until I started pushing the boundaries as it were!
