No sugar for 6 weeks. 1 ice cream?

(Christopher Worley) #1

Okay it’s been 6 weeks since I have had any sugar at all. I have kept a regiment of veggies and meats and salads. Is one ice cream going to ruin my entire Keto diet and it’s progress?

(Michelle) #2

It won’t ruin it. But you might not feel so well afterward.

(Christopher Worley) #3

As it it might make me sleepy or just I’ll from ingesting the sugar?

(Michelle) #4

Not sure. I haven’t cheated in 8 weeks of keto but so hear that it will make you feel sluggish and headachy.

If it knocks you out of ketosis, then you just need to kick start ketosis again. It isn’t difficult. If it took you a while to get into ketosis the first time, it’s possible it could take a a while.

Once your body becomes adjusted to burning fat for fuel, one time slip ups are less likely to bump you out for long at all. Your body will fairly quickly swap back into fat burning mode.

FYI: make some keto ice cream. It’s a bit on the expensive side. But oh so good. I followed someone else recipe here, but can never find it when I want it. But I remembered most of it I think, here’s what I do.

1 cup HWC
1 to 2 teaspoons of sweetener.
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
1 tablespoon of cocoa powder (I blended mine into the HWC warmed up to help dissolve the powder)
1/2 teaspoon of instant coffee (I suggest tasters choice. It really tastes very good, for instant).
Optional… I added about 2 tablespoon of coconut oil. The stuff I use still has that raw coconut flavor to it. It also seems to help hold the ice ram together a little longer as the coconut oil stay solid longer. That was my theory anyway, and that didn’t work so well. Next time I’ll try equal parts coconut oil and HWC and see how that holds up.

Freezer for about 3 hours. Maybe a little longer.

(Christopher Worley) #6

What is HWC?

(Consensus is Politics) #7

Heavy whipping cream. Sorry, I always try to use full terminology instead at least once per post.

(Ron) #8

You are 6 weeks in and on the verge of reaching your fat adaption goal through all that hard work of the past 6 weeks. The ice cream is going to delay that progression, and how much and for how long is unknown. Why even take the chance? Stay strong as your right there where after adapted will allow such indulgences should you choose with the body preferring to go right back to fueling on ketones instead of holding out longer for that glucose.:wink:

I figured it out. I’m a little slow see. But yeah I figured that’s why I put in my coffee. Lol. Hey do you h e a recipe for Keto coffee?

(Consensus is Politics) #10

My coffee cub is about 500 ml in size. So take that into account. I think it’s about twice normal size, so halving everything might work out ok.

I fill my cup half full of coffee.
Add 2 tspoons of coconut oil (new to keto should research how much they can handle. I have heard stories)
About 1 tblsp kettygold butter (best tasting butter I’ve had so far)
Fill the cup the rest of the way with heavy whipping cream (roughly 1/2 cup HWC).
Two serving of sweetener.

I recently discovered a stevia sweetener that comes in a box filled with little blue packets. It’s blended with another part of the same plant. It’s just as sweet but has less of the strange aftertaste.

(Christopher Worley) #11

Thanks I was wondering how to make that

Let me just give you my example and you can take what it what you will.

I went over 14 weeks without a true cheat. Then I had some birthday cake. Problem is, the sugar kicked the cravings back in. So I ended up binging on dark chocolate and peanut butter. The next day I didn’t feel bad like people said I would, but the cravings were still there. Fought them all day and ended up losing the battle when the family was making s’mores that night (something I easily refrained from in the 14 weeks).
So I had two cheat days in a row.

It’s been a week and my ketones are still at trace levels (and I always measured high before) and I can’t get back off the 3 pounds in water weight I gained from these two cheat days. I’ve also started drinking Diet Coke again as the sweet cravings wont go away. Probably why I’m only showing trace ketones. I’m trying to ween myself off again. And finally, I find I can no longer IF. My hunger signals are all out of wack again.

So for me, the cheat was definately NOT worth it. Some people can do okay once in a while.
For me, it’s a snowball effect that I’m still dealing with a week later.

Slippery slope bro.

(Davy) #14

Agree with Karen, a very slippery slope. Most times it’ll blow the whole thing. Bob’s keto icecream is good. If you don’t have the time or ingredients, you can just do what I do to get over humps like this. I’ll make another version, half or whole medium banana, some protein whey drink and water and ice cubes, so that it comes out pretty thick after blending it up. But it’ll sure seem like you’re eating icecream and ‘trick’ your craving and mind. (I know you’ll know it’s not real, but it does seem to trick and satisfy you, to get over that thought and craving)

(less is more, more or less) #15

That’s a highly individual question. Our bodies and hearts react differently to sugar. For me, the answer is yes, one ice cream is not worth the simulacrum of pleasure my brain mistakes for “delicious food.” I do not want to be gamed by sugar any more.

(Wendy) #16

If possible I’d wait a while longer but everyone is different. I often take frozen berries and add to HWC and mix. You can even freeze for a bit. You can add your choice of keto friendly sweetener to taste. It helps that ice cream craving.
Now that I’m months in I have had a rare ice cream and I stall for a bit, but I am strict afterwards and things eventually go back to normal. But as had been said we are all different in how it goes.

Here’s an analogy:
I’ve been exercising faithfully for 6 weeks. If I skip a day, is that going to ruin all the progress I’ve made?

I hope the answer is obvious.

(Lorraine) #18

I started Keto with a fast and just like everyone else, endured the Keto Flu. I consider that quite a price to pay in order to get into ketosis and have this diet really working for me. Therefore, I always considered the “price” I paid to get started and the “sacrifices” I made (cutting out my sugar addition) when holidays or celebrations neared. I, personally, feel that nothing is worth throwing away those sacrifices in order to indulge in some of my old addictions. It just wasn’t worth throwing away all my hard work on a dessert.

Now, that’s just me and everyone is different. I have had to come to terms with my sugar addiction and I want to be very careful not to allow myself to stumble down that road again.

(LeeAnn Brooks) #19

I really don’t think the two are analogous. Skipping a workout isnt going to alter the chemistry of your body.

Eating an abundance of carbs, especially if you are not fully fat adapted, will.

Dont have a cheat day , I have just learned my lesson! I was on holiday last week with my brother and mother in the South of France. Until then i had been fully keto and limiting wine to 1 glass per week. Last week food was fine until Friday , my travel day back. Wine consumption was up by a lot - well we were in a major wine growing area one had to taste the wine , red wine only for me.
However on Friday I travelled back I was going to fast for the day but couldnt manage it come the afternoon. There was very little choice of foodstuffs both at the airport and on the plane. Stuffed myself with a baguette and crisps ( chips).
Then Saturday I had a day in London - theatre visit , lunch and drinks. Craving carbs!!!
By Sunday I felt ill, stomach playing up - The bread and chips and crisps I ate the previous two days did me no good at all. Out of ketosis and blood sugars all over the place, on top of that I now have a cold.
Sunday I ate properly just one meal and no wine whatsoever.
Today I am fasting-hoping it will work and ovr this week return to where I was. I will also be trying another one day fast on Wednesday and Friday this week. I think it will be tough, I can still feel those cravings for rubbishy food.

I have learned that I cannot fall off this way of eating. I have to get back into it and quickly.
