Nitrates

(june) #1

Anyone concerned about nitrates in bacon and other meats from the deli? Keep hearing on the news linked to breast and colon cancers…I eat breakfast sausage almost everyday so might have to find a better choice…Any thoughts??

Don’t worry about Nitrates

Some people are. I am not one of those people.

Have a look at the actual study before getting too concerned.

You can purchase bacon without nitrites – that’s what we do. I am unwilling to assume the risk so all of our deli meats are nitrite free except the nitrites that naturally occur in some foods.

Pork belly is bacon without nitrates if you are really worried… I"m not.

I flip between buying the sugar free nitate free bacon to regular bacon at Costco. I am a little concerned but sometimes it’s just cost prohibitive. I’m pretty sure the way I was eating was way worse than the nitrates in my bacon

I eat both, but don’t think nitrates are an issue. Here’s a list of high nitrate fruits and vegetables:

Thanks for the replies…I will try to buy meats without nitrates when I can…I found Jones natural breakfast sausage without Nitrates so I’m happy it’s a quick breakfast before work…

Check your spinach.

Uhm, nitrate free bacon is cured with celery salt, which is, you guessed it, a source of nitrates. Just an all natural thing they can add. Like arsenic. ;-).

A lot of the colon cancer stuff is likely due to side effects from excess carbohydrates.

To put it simply, nope!

Not at all.

I am very concerned about all the negative coverage–not the nitrates.

I think science (and common sense) clearly indicate that processed foods (including meats) aren’t ideal for optimal health. This is a result of both the chemicals used and the state of factory meat production.

That doesn’t necessarily mean we should stop eating it entirely. The effect it has on the body and the importance that should be placed on limiting it varies individually. A metabolically deranged person transitioning from the SAD is different than a person trying to minimize an autoimmune disorder.

Bacon is one of my favorite foods. If I owned a hog farm, I’d make my own bacon that I would eat everyday. But I don’t, so I eat it only as an occasional treat. I’ve found that pork belly is a good substitute. True home curing is too time intensive to be practical for me, but I found a recipe online thats a close approximation and only takes a couple of hours.

Nitrates are just another substance used in dubious correlation theories to explain Cancer causation. The real cause being the carb based lifestyle.

The only time I got food poisoning was a couple of months ago after eating a processed meat & cheese plate at a new pub in Cairns. Yep so keto. The pub was great but I think maybe they didn’t have their food handling sorted quite yet .

Good side: it kicked me off into fasting
