Newby - diuretic effect of keto adaptation?

(Luke) #1

Hi all,

I’ve been on Keto for 3-4 weeks now and am still in the “adaptation phase”.

I’ve noticed I urinate a lot more often than I used to. Is there some sort of diuretic effect expected when going through keto adaptation? Hoping this is normal and will pass…

Cheers
Luke

Absolutely- I was peeing for England when I started keto. The more weight I lose, the more I pee.

I’m sure someone will be along shortly to explain exactly why (in a better manner than I could)!

It gets a little better, but the diuretic effect of keto doesn’t go away. We can’t adequately hold onto electrolytes when the carbs are super low, and Insulin always at near basal levels doesn’t help either, which is why so many have to bring the salt way up to compensate. Most go overboard on that one for their needs, but make sure your salt intake is adequate, and don’t forget about potassium and magnesium, which most are deficient in even that don’t eat keto and can hold onto them better.

What @lfod14 said…. You should be good to go then

Ah ok I see, thanks! I thought frequent urination was a symptom of insulin resistance / type 2 diabetes and was expecting it to resolve with keto lol.

How about b vitamins? Should I be taking a b complex if I’m peeing so much?

Thanks

I was T2, it was the reason for doing keto. I often had to pee 8-10 times in the night. That has gone down to once a night and sometimes none.
So yes, I don’t pee so much anymore but I still was peeing plenty when 1st adapting (the electrolyte thing as mentioned)
I overdid the salt and overdid the fluids so still peed more than I needed.
I also drink too much coffee in the mornings … that’s a diuretic too.

It is, but also a sign of you dehydrating from the diuretic nature of keto. So two things producing the same end annoyance. The diabetes end will self correct with Keto, the peeing may take a while to adapt, when you’re adequately hydrated (can take a couple days of being intentional with it) that should get better.
