Newbie vitamin question

(Anabel ) #1

Hi well I’m new to keto, on my third week. I’ve seen where people ask are they taking potassium or magnesium. Is that necessary to take supplements while doing keto? Would I be doing keto wrong if I didnt? And how do you know how much to take?

(Janelle) #2

My doctor recommended a multivitamin. Others may have different reasons for taking supplements. I do take Magnesium Citrate before bed. Helps me sleep and keeps me “regular” usually.

I take vitamin D and a B-complex daily, plus a magnesium supplement most days.

I don’t know what is “required” for a ketogenic diet.

The reason most people on keto supplement electrolytes is because without carbs we don’t retain as much water. So we typically drink more water and it goes right through us, this flushes out electrolytes. Lack of sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium all have side effects you should look into. You need a balance of all of them, most try to get as much as possible from food sources unless fasting. The fasting groups is where you’ll see the most electrolyte supplementation.

*Potassium supplementation is considered dangerous if not done properly.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #5

If you keep your salt intake up, you should be able to get enough potassium and magnesium from your food, generally speaking. It’s when intake of one mineral goes awry that the others all get out of balance, too. Try for 12.5 g of table salt a day; recent research suggests that’s a very healthy level.

Thanks Janelle and John I should probably be taking multivitamins anyway. Theres just so many different kinds when i get to that aisle, im like nevermind lol

Brennan I needed that dumbed down for me lol i will do some more research thanks for all the info. I really was confused about weather or not i need to do that.

Paul thanks for that too! I’ve been holding off putting salt in my water. I see everyone talking about doing that but I was thinking It wasn’t a big deal but I see your point.

Thanks everyone i appreciate you all taking the time to reply. :hugs: I really think I’m sticking to keto but I need to do it the right way. First time I tried i thought keto was just cutting sugar and carbs, this time around I’m more informed so I think I’m doing a lot better with fat and protein and I do notice a big change. :+1:

Keep net carbs under 20 total, keep your electrolytes up (including lots of water) and don’t starve yourself. It’s that easy to start seeing positive results.
