Newbie - Stevia and Monkfruit to sweeten coffee

#1

New to Keto - While driving for long hours at the start of vacation, I stopped at starbucks. They had Stevia mixed with monkfruit packets. Usually I do 2 raw sugars but decided to try one packet and It actually tasted fine. Is it an OK Keto substitute?

The 2nd ingredient is fructose so I would pass. I am sure others would be OK with it. You can buy travel ready stevia if you want “sugar” while traveling.

Thanks Matt! I find Stevia by itself leaves me with an awful aftertaste. I guess it’s time to drink it with no sweetener.

They have blends and such… I don’t use them but here is the link

Keep in mind that having these on occasion while traveling is not the end of the world. I just would not use them all the time.

I like the taste and the sweetening power of a stevia/erythritol blend. Truvia is a blend that doesn’t contain any fructose, and you can buy it in packets for travel.

But read the list of ingredients before you buy any artificial sweetener. Even the Truvia brand has a version that is stevia mixed with sucrose (table sugar), so you have to watch what you’re getting! Not only that, but my sister bought something called “Stevia in the Raw,” and it’s half maltodextrin. I haven’t fought that fight with her yet, but I do plan to be picking up something that’s truly sugar-free for my own use. It certainly seems that most of these sweeteners should really be called “Sugar with a Little Something Else in It and Called by a Different Name, So That We Can Fake You Out.”

If you can tolerate it, this particular brand happens in my opinion to be the best stevia I’ve tried. I use 6 or more packs a day of any artificial sweetener, and this is on the top of my list for agreeability. (hasn’t knocked me out of ketosis but may kill me otherwise haha)

Thanks

I didn’t like the stevia in the raw one bit!

Which sweetener do you think you’ll pick up @PaulL?

#10

Not sure. You mentioned a brand that you liked best. Which one is it?

@KarenEckel the Whole Earth brand they have a Starbucks that you mention is actually my favorite :grinning: I haven’t bought it, just used it at Starbucks.

I use anything in a pink, blue or yellow packet haha

Well, as I said (I think!), I like Truvia, that stevia/erythritol blend. It’s very sweet, so I use somewhat less than the recommended amount, and it doesn’t seem to trigger my sugar cravings if I don’t overdo it. I got started using it because it’s what the local supermarket sells (literally every other sweetener on their shelves contains sugar!), but then decided I liked it anyway.

I know this is a subject you’re thoughtful about, so wondered what you may be looking to do here! :grinning:

I am loving lakanto gold monkfruit/erythritol blend, tastes like brown sugar. So good in coffee. Does not affect my bg or insulin. But fructose…beware! It’s as evil as Maltodextrin.
