So I am relatively new to Keto, had some success weight loss wise over last 8 weeks but about to go on a surfing trip to the Maldives for 10 days. we plan to surf 3 times a day which will be quite energy sapping and we will be living on a boat that is going to be feeding us vegetables, curries and lots of fruit. I am not worried about weight loss, I will be burning plenty of fuel, however, I am concerned about having a negative reaction to eating carbs and feeling rubbish on a trip of a lifetime and there won’t be any supermarkets around for me to stock up on anything, any suggestions would be really good.
Newbie on a surfing trip
Do you have any metabolic issues? If not, I wouldn’t stress for ten days. You’re likely fat adapted, so just stick to whole foods while you’re on the trip and avoid processed snacks. The fruit you’re eating will likely be local and non genetically modified, I doubt you’ll feel like crap unless you have metabolic damage or are eating crappy sources of carbs. I would fast in the mornings and then just do OMAD or TMAD and not worry so much about ketosis. The fast will bring you back into ketosis daily if you’re not going nuts with the carbs.
If you want to stay strict keto, pack some beef sticks, nuts, cheese whisps, coconut or olive oil, olives, and other non-perishables.
That trip will be awesome. I’m only 3 months in keto. But was thinking. . Keep calm and keto on. Just do your best . But enjoy the moments and the the variety of food and tastes. You know keto is the right way so once you return, if some carby meltdown occurs , you will get right back too it asap long term. But I wouldn’t go too hard on the fruits . But I would taste em and savour them. If they are serving curries at you maybe dodge the rice by eating curry out of lettuce leaves or similar. And if they have avocados, I would hit them with oil and spices on top as much as poss.
it maybe hard to not just eat to satiety with all that yummy food around, but if you can limit meal size a bit, it may help you stay in keto more and really enjoy the surfing side of things more with better mental focus and constant fat burning energy. And you will be burning alot of glycogen too from the exercise so that will help. And finally if you carb out and suddenly feel like sh§$t, I would consider a 48 Hr fast, start a day with a bulletproof coffee , then go 48 hrs . With salt on the tongue every 3 hrs as Karl mentioned in a podacast recently. In fact I would consider salt on the tongue every 3 hours anytime to keep your surfing recovery on track through electrolyte balance.
I realise that you may have been already, but I wanted to add to this thread for future reference for yourself or for anyone else who finds it.
I’ve done a couple of surfing trips (Barbados & Lanzarote) since being Keto and it’s not easy to stay on Keto while you’re away at a surf resort. As others have said, just keep the carbs to a minimum and fast if you feel you can. At 8 weeks in you will have some metabolic flexibility to switch between fat & carbs as sources of fuel.
From personal experience I can say that while I’m surfing my energy levels are more sustained and I don’t get the same post-surf fatigue that I used to pre-Keto.
One thing I will say is that you should always take electolyte supplements and make sure you have enough to cover the entire trip. The last thing you want is a muscle cramp either in or out of the water. Sea salt can usually be found anywhere, so you could always buy that when you arrive.
Maldives is on my list of places to surf, so I’m well-jel. Hope your trip was good.
