Newbie Observations Here

(Mike) #1

I’m a newbie to this forum, but not to Keto. Been on keto plan for around 18 months.

I definitely feel better generally, and have even dropped a few lbs.

Two main observations are that 1) very easy to take in too much protein (and too many calories in general). All the keto snacks (pork rinds, nuts, cheeses, etc are very calorie dense and can shoot you past your target energy intake very quickly. and 2) the long search for keto compliant baked goods, bread in particular, is over. As admirable as all the online recipe efforts are, I’ve been disappointed time and time again. So, if I want a crusty, chewy piece of bread badly enough, I’m going to have it and then reset. I have not slipped up a single time since adopting the keto approach, but I’ll admit that it is difficult sometime. In particular, when traveling for work as frequently as I do.

LOL I love this. I am constantly amazed at how people will put in 300% of time commitment for a result that’s 25% as good as the real thing.

No thanks, I’ll eat some bacon instead

Agreed all are bad. I cute and smoke my own bacon. It’s awesome.

With respect to the comment on baked goods, I agree good choices are limited. One item I have seen available are low carb tortillas. You can’t eat a bunch of them, but 1 or 2 may be OK.

Only after a certain number of posts or minutes spent browsing I believe…

I don’t understand why so many people make the switch to keto then devote masses of time trying to find ways to keep eating the same foods that resulted in keto being their best option… I just don’t miss bread.

(Brian) #8

But we’re not eating the same foods. We’re eating keto foods that might resemble things that we used to enjoy.

Glad you don’t miss bread. It does make things easier, I suppose. But I’m not planning on giving up things that fit well into my keto way of eating because they may resemble something bad that I used to enjoy.

To each their own…

Yes.

The more people try to eat Keto versions of their old food, the more they just miss their old food!

And let’s be honest… keto versions of cake, muffins, candy, cookies, etc always taste like butt. Even the “premium” mixes offer little by means of flavor and usually have more carbs than we should eat anyway (you can say anything is “low carb” if you make the serving size 1 square inch, lol).

If you get hit with a mega-craving it’s better choose something savory and fatty, even if you go above your calories for the day. Then just fast for 24 hours and you’ll be right back on track. If you give in to “keto sweets” you will just be hungry again in an hour (and you will still probably go above your calories for the day anyway).

I’ve done keto on and off for 19 years now and the best results I’ve ever had when I just stuck the basics.

And just in case anyone was wondering, keto brownies taste just as bad today as they tasted in 1999.

Yep. The behaviors that landed me in the situation where I felt I needed a change are behaviors I’m looking to change, not to make sustainable.

(Brian) #11

That explains a lot.

The mixes and prepackaged stuff… I agree. Not worth it, a ton of crap in it to extend shelf life, usually high in carbs anyway. If I were buying rather than making from scratch, I might think more like you do.

(Jay Patten) #12

Lol, yeah I just don’t have the time or desire to make goodies from scratch. I’ll invest an hour or two in making a great dinner, but after that… I’m done, lol.

Maybe one day I’ll break down and make a “real” recipe just to see what I’m missing, lol.

(Pete A) #13

I do admire those who can create a Keto-version of something. Personally I stay away…

I know, cooking and baking are not eveyone’s thing. I kinda forget that sometimes.

There was a thing I got in my email the other day for a dude trying to sell his “online culinary school” thing. It’s a whole bunch of videos and he wanted $200. I was seriously tempted. I’ve always thought maybe if I had a dozen lifetimes to live, one of them would be as a chef.

This. Exactly.
