Newbie needs weight loss reassurance

#1

Hi, I started Keto 3 weeks ago weighing 148 lbs. I want to lose 2 stone. I’m 50 years old and 5ft 5. I lost 5lbs in week 1 and have fluctuated half a pound up and down in weeks 2 and 3 meaning that I am still 143 lbs today. I understand that I am fat adapting etc and maybe I’m losing inches ( I didn’t measure when I started) but it’s discouraging not seeing the scale going down. I need some reassurance to keep me going. I haven’t cheated… not yet anyway

Ok, here’s some. You are not significantly overweight, so you won’t see a 20 pound weight loss in 2 weeks like someone who weighs 300 pounds, because you don’t have as far to go.

Realistic sustainable weight loss is somewhere around 1 to 2 pounds per week average over extended periods. You are within that realistic range. I would suggest continuing for a “trial run” of 8 weeks, by which time you should be more adapted to the new eating patterns and the early fluctuations will have settled down. Then if you are 8 to 10 pounds down, I would say it is working for you.

If not, then you can decide whether to continue or try a different way of eating that works for you.

You don’t really have to measure inches - the way my pants and belt fit tell me that.

What he said. Keep in mind that the majority of us here see keto as a way of life, not just a way to lose 2 stone. If you go back to eating carbs when you reach your goal, ESPECIALLY if you are hormonally deranged (ie., insulin resistant, have “wheat belly,” or T2D), you’ll gain it back eventually.

I am so with you Gillybean. I am almost two weeks in and not weighing myself so I don’t self destruct! I only have about 15 # to lose and was getting discouraged just after 1 week, but today I tried on some pants that were really tight last weekend, and to my surprise I notice they are not so tight now! Hang in there…I am right with you girl! I am 61 years old and I am really feeling this is the way to go for a lifestyle of eating!

Also - unless you have a super-accurate scale, small 1-2 pound fluctuations could just be the scale.

I weighed myself this morning right before going out for a walk, and it’s rather warm here so I sweated a bit. Came back home and was curious how much water weight I sweated off, and I gained about 3 pounds. From walking, without eating or drinking anything. I have developed human photosynthesis!!

Or more likely my scale is really dependent on exactly where it is placed on the floor (old-school hardwood floors made of separate strips of lumber, not perfectly level). :slightly_smiling_face:

I prefer waist measurement, at as exactly placed as I can reasonably get, to pants fit which depends on how recently I washed my jeans… :flushed: don’t judge…

Thanks Bella. I did Keto last year from September until March this year. I was very happy with the weight loss and the Keto way of life. Then I suffered an injury and had surgery and I’m still off work. In those 6 months Keto went out of the window and I gained 2 stone :rage:. No one to blame but myself . I lost more in the first 3 weeks the last time so I just needed a bit of reassurance to keep me on track. I am eating much more fat this time ( but haven’t gone over my macros). I know that this is the way to go but having done low fat diets all my adult life it’s hard… but I am enjoying the butter and especially cream

So is my scale. I can gain or lose 3 or 4 lbs in the bathroom alone
