Newbie here. I feel like I'm messing up before I'm hardly even started. I might just need a slap though lol

Hi everyone! I am going to be 30 days into Keto on the 16th of December. To start off, I don’t have a lot to lose. I quit smoking and gained 20 pounds in the last year and a half. I am 5 foot 5 and started Keto at 140 pounds and 21% body fat, and I am 45 years old.

My friend sold me on Keto, and I’m SO glad I’m doing it, and I actually enjoy it. I guess my issue is, I read so many Keto Facebook pages, social media sites on it, see before and after pictures, and read the quick success stories and I feel like maybe I am not doing something correctly.

After a week, I lost five pounds and went down to 135 pounds

I know I shouldn’t pay attention to the scale and pay more attention to measurement and how my clothes fit. Unfortunately, neither of those have budged at all.

Now, saying this, I realize I’m not even a full 30 days in. I think I just see so many people with so many success stories after two weeks, I’m afraid I’m not doing things correctly.

I will say I am not “strict keto”. My friend said that to start off, I should just concentrate on the net carbs being under 20. so that’s what I’m strict with, and eating no sugar. I do eat fats. Eggs, bacon, heavy cream. etc. I’m pretty positive I don’t eat enough protein, I know I should and I am trying. The issue I think I do have is I don’t eat enough, period. I was never much of a huge eater.

I guess after being into it a month I at least thought I would see a TINY bit off my measurements?

Really, what I need from you all is just either a “You’ve only been in it a month, don’t rush it”, or a “Maybe you should try this or do this or that”.

I do enjoy this diet, and I want to do things correctly if I’m going to do it at all, right?

I appreciate all of your help ahead of time and I’m happy I found this forum! I wish you all the happiest of holidays :)

I’m sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe those with the least to lose takes longer. Especially when eating small amounts on a regular diet.

Everything is fine. Stick with it. I’ll talk as much as you need tomorrow. I need some sleep.

Your body is happy. And changing. Give it the time it needs

Those quick success stories, keep in mind, are outliers and the majority of folks lose weight at a far more reasonable rate. I remember seeing people post that they’ve lost 100lbs in under six months and thinking wow, but then thinking about it more critically, that’s more than a pound every two days and that’s remarkable! If I lost weight at that rate I’d be posting pics too and screaming from the rooftops, but for me it’s been less than a pound a week and sometimes slower than that. There are several threads here on our forums of “slow losers” who I think to be more common than appears. I think there’s quite a bit of bias in the ultra-successful stories as they’re who we see in the posts and they’re the ones that stick in our minds… Then I realised, every 1/2 pound, every gram I lose, no matter how slow, is still a loss.

As we like to say around here - Keep calm and keto on. Change is happening, but it’s not always immediately visible.

Welcome to the wildest ride you have ever had

There is a huge difference between surviving and thriving :open_mouth:

IF/EF Keto WOE is all about THRIVING :grinning:

With IF/EF Keto WOE we adapt our body to burning fat as its primary fuel :sunglasses:

With IF/EF Keto WOE we consciously eat (or don’t eat) so we can understand how what we eat (or don’t eat) effects us both physically and mentally

Everybody is different so everything works differently for each of us, it’s up to us to discover just how defferent we are :slightly_smiling_face:

IF/EF Keto WOE is Self-Discovery

Good morning every and thank you for the quick replies! You are all so kind!

Wishbone, I was thinking that myself, as that is how it usually works with, dare I say, “regular” diets  I wasn’t sure though.

Matt, I promise you I won’t give up. I would absolutely love to talk more. I need it! I’m off to work from 11 am to 1130 pm right now and won’t be available all day. Such is the life of a nurse =/ Crossing my fingers you’re around tomorrow?

Keehan, yes, the success stories, are making me feel unsuccessful lol!

Dan_Dan, I am so beginner, I figured out what IF was from reading Keto pages all day but what is EF? This was something I planned to look up on the forums this weekend and learn about; fasting. I know nothing about it. Or maybe I do and don’t even know it?

Again, you are all amazing and I cannot thank you enough. Hopefully I can chat with some of you tomorrow when I’m off work. Happy Friday and enjoy!

You might want to try IF or just have eggs for 3-5 days to kick start some loss. But I can’t stress enough about taking your measurements. Keto makes weight come off in strange ways! Just stick to it and you’ll get results, it just won’t be overnight for most of us. KCKO

Thank you for the encouragement, Sophie <3

I can try that. I have to look up what IF is all about tomorrow and how to do it when I’m off. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one

I intermittent fast every day just by skipping breakfast. It’s referred to as 18/6 and works well for me since I was never a breakfast eater anyway. Sometimes I breeze through lunch without hunger too and just have OMAD (one meal a day). There is lots of info here about it. Good luck on your journey!

(Dan Dan) #10

EF Extended Fasting not recommended for newbies, better left until you become fat adapted

IF/EF Keto WOE is Self-Discovery

Good luck and much success in your journey in IF/EF Keto WOE

Your body is happy. And changing. Give it the time it needs

I love this sentiment

Hi @Angelina0516 I’ve known many nurses both friends and family and know that not working days is a huge stressor on your body, producing cortisol and keeping fat burning slower than those fast losers.

Now is the time to make good habits, no sugar, no starch, and see what you can do to limit diet/energy drinks and introduce coffee and tea if you can (making assumptions here)

So then on top of the common dietary interventions and sleep hygiene tweaks there are a lot of hormonal ‘recalibrations’ that may happen that can appear to stall the scale but if you take tape measurements you may find that clothes may be fitting looser (bone remineralization and muscle building).

We don’t slap, just say KCKO, we’ve been there.

For many of us Keto is a healing process we maybe weren’t even consciously aware we needed to go through. Our body is spending a lot of time in the beginning healing a lot of damage. Especially in women, it seems, the weight loss comes after our body is able to get our hormones all figured out. Some women lose right away, some take months of slow loss, some lose and gain and then lose a bit more. There is no one size fits all result. So enjoy the journey and keep learning, every mistake gives you an opportunity to learn and do better next time.
Is this your first time attempting to put your body into Ketosis? That might be a big part of your slow loss. It can take some of us MONTHS to move into a fat adapted state.
You will also find that a lot of the big loss stories are from people who have a lot to lose, those of us sitting on 30 or fewer lbs to lose tend to watch it go at a far slower rate. Wait till you get to the last 10lbs!! You’ll be watching it drop in ounces haha.
Keep calm and keto on!

If you’re not hungry when you eat, you’re eating too much. Adjust your meal/meals to the point that you’re hungry at meal time.

(Dan Dan) #17

@240lbfatloss @Angelina0516

Since I have Fat Adapted I no longer Experience Hunger or Food Cravings :grinning:

I practice IF 23:1 hours daily (OMAD Keto) and EF 48 hours once weekly :bacon:

On Occasion I have an Indulgence Day :icecream: :birthday: :innocent:

Sorry for the late reply…holidays have me nuts atm! I know night shift can be killer on the body but thankfully, I stopped doing them about 3 years ago. My shifts are 10 am - 1030 pm 3 days a week. I quit energy drinks when I started Keto. I do drink these though and add them to my water. I usually drink one a day, sometimes two. https://tinyurl.com/y9w5y8zu . Maybe something evil is in them? :hushed: I do drink BP Coffee in the morning with a teaspoon of coconut oil, a tablespoon of butter, heavy cream, and whipped cream on top! lol ugh just frustrating. I feel like my body should be shedding bonus pounds for every cookie and cake I’ve said no to this holiday season. I haven’t cheated ONCE.

(Michael ) #19

Those have splenda which has been shown to spike insulin in some studies. I personally avoid it because i don’t want chemicals in my body. You could try stevia and see how that works. I get an insulin response to it but a lot of people swear by it. At, the ver least, it’s natural

(CharleyD) #20

@Fat_Mike beat me to it. That and the maltodextrose (sugar) and honey (sugar) really puts the lie to their 0g carb claim. It’s not a lot, but yes, there will be an insulin response if it tastes sweet, and as long as the insulin is pulsing, you won’t be mobilizing any fat.

Not catastophic, I had to learn it the hard way and I had read it all before I started but Stevia in the Raw was causing my stall this summer.

That’s not to say it’s definitely causing your apparent scale difficulties, just letting you know that it may be contributing. Unfortunately or fortunately, you’ve gotten this far with a dietary overhaul and very good discipline, but I bet if you can make it over this hurdle you can make some gains.

It just sucks that our brains betray us and food manufacturers lie like this.
