My husband and I have decided to try the KetoDiet. I’m 5’5” 135# and 59 years old. Every calculator I use that gives me macro goals tells me I will lose one pound a month. One pound a month? I want to lose 10 pounds but I’d rather that not take nearly a year! I’ve done it in 6weeks counting calories,(just not feeling that though). However, I think this plan is good for my husband who needs to lose a good bit, get his A1c and BP under control and I think both of us doing it will best lead to his success. Is it really going to take 10months to lose 10 pounds. (Carb goal 25g)
Newbie: 1# a month?
I have never seen a calculator that tells you expected loss time frame.
Everyone is different and metabolisms are all different.
I will warn you right now this is not a diet plan, embarking on this and expecting to lose ten pounds and stopping will only lead to further problems, I will also say that chances are if you do the first few weeks right you will never want to return to your old ways anyway.
Depending upon your BF% and your activity level you should be no less than 1500 calories. Neither you or your husband should restrict calories in the form of fat until at least one month but more likey 2-3 esp if he has metabolic dysfunction. This would be at the fat adaption phase.
Hello and welcome to the forums. Dont fuss over intital goals or any of that stuff. keep net carbs sub 20 and eat more fat than protien. That will get you into ketosis. To do everything perfect initally is daunting. just start with the basics. that being said, keto is not just low carb. have you done your diligent research? fasting, good fats, nutrients, etc. If you know it and are honest with what you eat. a pound loss a week is definitely there for you.
There is no way to tell anyone exactly what to expect, there are so many variables that differ from one individual to another. The best way to think of this way of eating is not as a weight loss diet. It is primarily a way of eating that promotes metabolic healing. This can include all types of improvements to hormones, bone health, mental clarity, skin, hair and on and on. Weight loss is a very frequent, happy byproduct that happens as your body heals. In general, women tend to lose weight slower than men. Try to pay attention to all the non scale victories you experience along the way, it will help keep you motivated if your weight takes longer than you are hoping or if you experience stalls along the way.
Good luck!
Use which ever calculator you like BUT DON’T select the option for “lose weight” which will generally give you very calorie restricted goals which is NOT how keto typically works.
Aim for the maintenance calories at least and the gram macros that go with that. Many people do that and lose lots of weight. What you will lose will be more to do with your starting point, metabolic condition, and how your particular flavor of keto works for you. This is what a calculator worked out for me now. I follow the lower one successfully (7 months in, 60lbs down). I have only ever calorie restricted when I lost appetite for a few weeks in month 3 but appetite came back.
My calc for M/5’9"/210/47yr with moderate/high protein is:
2035kcal, 154F/143P/20C in grams (50% fat grams, but 67% by calories)
That’s with moderate/high protein. With lower protein, it would be:
2035kcal, 173F/100P/20C so about (60% fat grams but 76% by calories)
Thank you for your input! I will need to be patient, not my specialty. . Entering day 2, I know I have a lot to learn!
