New to Keto and heelllloooo gallbladder!

(Lisa) #1

Hi All!

I’m new to keto and absolutely loving every minute. It’s something I can really stick with. Although, I’m experiencing gallbladder pain. I’m assuming this is from the change in diet to LCHF. I’m doing self care at this point - Dandelion tea, Castor Oil packs, Epsom salt water, lemon…etc.

I’ve had small attacks before that went away. Has anyone else experienced this in the beginning and did it go away? I am about to start a new job and DO NOT have time for surgery…

I had bad right shoulder pain that is indicative of gall bladder issues when I first started keto, went away after about 3-4 weeks. Didn’t know what it was until well after.

Search youtube for “Dr Berg gallbladder” where he addresses how to help with the pain etc.

Thank you, Allan!

Also, are you sure it’s gallbladder? It could actually be your liver being inflamed. If you have non-alcoholic fatty liver syndrome, you need to be ingesting a lot of greens as you do keto to keep your liver cleaned out (otherwise the fat you’re ingesting can really agitate your liver). Trust me - I know…still dealing with that myself (my liver will swell any time I ingest deep fried foods). The good thing, if you start doing IF and eventually EF, this will help the liver consume the fatty incursions and heal itself.

I just had all the blood work known to man done and all of my liver numbers were fine so I assume it’s not my liver. Although my LDL was high. I’ve passed stones in the past…so I’m assuming at this point that it’s the gallbladder. All symptoms are synonymous with a gallbladder attack and I was a low fat eater for a long time (I’m reading this causes stones). I went to the ER once and they found nothing. At all. I had pain and did the gallbladder cleanse & felt better. I was shocked about the liver being ok…I used to drink regularly and was a binge drinker.

So I did a lot of research on gallbladder and Keto when I was sure I was having gallbladder issues.

Here’s the gist of what I found out:
As the gallbladder processes fat, Keto can certainly make a bad situation worse… at least in the beginning. The traditional medical advice for gallbladder problems is to avoid fat in your diet.

But here’s why that might not be the best advice. The gallbladder secretes bile to break down fat. If one eats a low fat diet, it doesn’t secrete as much bile, and the instead calcifies into gallbladder stones. If one eats enough fat, the gallbladder has to work and sectrete bile, thereby not allowing it to calcify.

So initially, if you have stones formed or forming, a HF diet will cause quite a bit of discomfort because it kicks the gallbladder into drive and can push out the stones. But in the long run, you will be less likely to form new stones and your system will work as it’s intended to.

Thank you! I listened to an informative Podcast that talked about this issue. She said in the beginning you may need to take supplements as your body adjusts. It makes sense. Mine are on the way! Hoping it helps.

I had my gallbladder out on a Friday and tried to go back on Monday. That was too soon, but Wednesday was fine. I was teaching elementary school, so not a super physical job, but on my feet all day.

I hope you are feeling better and having a speedy recovery! Did you try any supplements before the surgery?

I’ve been doing ACV, castor oil packs, lemon juice, dandelion tea and I’m feeling better. I have gallbladder supplements that will arrive tomorrow. I’m hoping they do the trick…

Feel better…

Thanks for all the information. Going through same issue myself after 6 months of keto. Assuming gallbladder.

Tamara, I started taking Christopher’s Liver and Gallbladder supplements twice a day and I feel MUCH better. I got them from Amazon. I was having some intense pains and I feel like I did pass some stones. I felt much better afterwards. I did lose more weight after that little bout of issues!

Thank you so much for your reply, I just saw it  did you ever do a gallbladder and liver cleanse?

(Lisa) #13

Yes. I did. It solved my problem.
