New salt aversion

(Mandy) #1

Hey all,

At roughly 17 weeks in, I only just started (past few weeks) getting roughly 4-5 grams of salt a day after lab work showing i pretty low in sodium. I started making salt caps and taking a few a day to get me there as well as heavily salting my food. I LOVE salt. always have. I used to suck on salt crystals all day. Lately even the thought of putting a salt crystal in my mouth makes my stomach turn. I wonder, does my body now have the sufficient salt it needs and therefore sucking on it now sounds terrible. just an interesting observation.

thanks for reading

As I understand it, lab tests for electrolytes show how well your body is managing its electrolyte levels. Dietary intake has minimal impact if not very low or high. Unless you have a reason to believe your body’s signaling is deranged I’d salt to taste/desire. If the salt aversion continues long enough that you feel it is becoming detrimental you might seek additional medical advice/testing.

I think when eating salt makes you say, “Yuck, that’s really salty!” it means you have enough salt. If you eat something that’s really salty and you think, “OMG, that tastes so good!” then you probably are low.

I don’t know, and I’d never heard of the sodium-keto thing before, so I’ve been trying to figure this out. Up to now I haven’t used salt in the kitchen or at the table, but I don’t avoid salt either (e.g., in bacon, cheese, canned goods). So I figure I’m around 1600 mg a day.

Recently I tried putting 2 grams of salt in a drink one day, and 1 gram the next day. It tasted okay, but my body didn’t like it–especially the second day. I could try salting my food, but yuck.

@brownfat I was not aware thats how testing is done…hmm. I think I needed the salt as I was constantly feeling a little off. I’m still on the fence about magnesium and potassium supplementation. I’ve read we should but I have also read that if your salt is right, your body can take care of the rest.

@VirginiaEdie

That is how I feel it works! Whether that is true not, who knows!

@islandlight I rather like salt so this is odd for me. I have always been an oversalter.

Means you don’t need so much now, listen to your body.
