New milestone

(Doing a Mediterranean Keto) #1

Today I weight 84.4kg, which is the weight I had when I got married.

I will celebrate this new landmark with a cake (it is a joke).

Today I have lost 0.9kg, without doing anything special yesterday. Instead, I was one week without losing weight (on the contrary, I gained weight, one day I went up 1kg).

Since I always eat the same proportions and the same type of food, the only reason I can think of is water retention: for some reason, one day my body decides it is time to accumulate water big time.

Then, this water remains for a few days, with the weight being stable, and then one day, the water is flushed out, and the weight goes down, below the initial point.

And repeat, repeat and repeat the process.

Why is my body doing this strange thing of water retention in and out, I would say once per week?

Hormones flux up and down. It could be simply that.

Congratulations on your weight loss and journey.

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #3

Hormones, as Eric said, even in men. Including stress hormones like cortisol. Also, you may eat the same thing everyday, but that doesn’t mean your body uses the same amount of energy each day, or that your environment is the same everyday.

Congratulations on your progress!

For me, I stay off the scale - I detest it. I don’t even know where ours is, honestly. The only time I get weighed is when I go to the doctor’s, which hasn’t been since early August. I don’t expect to have to go back any time soon, and that is okay. I also understand that a lot of people find it helpful, and that’s great.

I don’t care to know that I am a pound up or down, or five pounds, etc. I know how I am doing from how I look and how my clothes fit, really. What is the scale but just a number anyway, plus it doesn’t take into account any body recomposition, muscle, or other non-scale victories. At my last weight, I was 180 from 230 and still have 30 lbs. to go. Still, though, 180 this time around looks waaay better than any other time I was this weight before. Due to keto, I’ve lost weight in places I never did before (insides of my knees, saddlebags, back fat, etc.), and just look more fit - all of this without exercise. The scale doesn’t show me that. I don’t want to feel anxious, either, if my weight is up for whatever reason at the moment.

May be hormones, or the whoosh effect

(Doing a Mediterranean Keto) #6

The whoosh effect seems to describe pretty well what happens to me. I had never heard of it. Is this effect existing in the scientific literature?

(mole person) #7

Unless it’s exactly the same foods it may be an inflammatory effect caused by something you eat. This happens to me quite regularly. I’ll be completely stable for ages eating just beef, I’ll barely budge by 1/5 lb daily. Then if I have some cheese or a bit of a vegetable that I react to or some nuts I’ll be two pounds heavier the next day and it takes a couple of days to get back to normal. Try paying attention to if you seem more bloated on days that you weigh more. It may suggest that you are having a bit of inflammation.

(Doing a Mediterranean Keto) #8

It happened to me twice when I did some muscle training: the day afterwards, I went up 1kg approximately, in both occasions. So it was really the physical exercise (I read that when recovering, muscles tend to absorb water).

Then it happened another day, when I was extremely active the whole day (a weekend, taking heavy things from one place to another).

But then it happened again a few days ago, without recognizable heavy physical activity.

Really, a mystery.

(mole person) #9

Oh, the exercise definitely explains it. When I stress my muscles enough I get inflammation that can last for days. This is a good source of inflammation!

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #10

Yes. Acute inflammation is a healthy stressor; it is chronic systemic inflammation that is the problem.

I just want to add that my weight seems to fluctuate in a 10-lb./5 kilo range, but I notice absolutely no effect on the fit of my clothing during any part of the cycle, so I have stopped even thinking about it. It seems to be a completely natural process. By contrast, the long-term trend is interesting: I have been cycling within this weight range for almost two years, now, yet I can now wear trousers that were too tight to button, two years ago. So weight is clearly not the best indicator for what is going on with my body.

(Marianne) #11

That would freak me out and be discouraging - to me - even if my clothes fit the same. That is why I choose not to weigh.

(Bob M) #12

Although not as highly fluctuating as Paul’s is, my weight was fluctuating a lot, say 5-7 pounds many days or weeks. That’s why I no longer use the scale.

Like Paul, though, I am looking at buying new belts and clothes. I bought some “goal” pants to see when I can get in them.

(Marianne) #13

I hear tell you’re already in them!
