New Here, Not new to Keto
He made a mistake. Look at the comments under that video. Everyone corrects him.
This isn’t aimed at you Doug, its meant to be in general, but I couldn’t be bothered to figure out where to ask this. I keep meaning to and always seem to get distracted with all the good information I find here.
Q1: So my veggie has 20 grams of carbs, 10 grams of sugar, and 10 grams of fiber (i just made the numbers up on the fly, may not reflect an actual veggie). Does that mean the 10 grams of carbs cancel out the 10 grams of sugar, 1 for 1? Or… does it just bring the total gram count down to a total of 10 grams?
Q2: Related to Q1, if I add psyllium husk (fiber, i.e. metamucil) to my meal, does that negate my carbs in that meal?
What Im getting at here is this. Does fiber negate carbs that aren’t what it is a part of? To expand this out, if I ate something with 10 grams of carbs, followed by a metamucil chaser with 5 grams of carbs, does then make it only a 5 gram carb meal? Or a 15 gram carb meal with 5 grams that cancel themselves out?
Yeah, I know, wtf kinda question is this. But I tend to get technical with everything, and I mean that in the real sense of technical. As my Mom always reminds me, I should have been an engineer or a doctor.
The fiber does not get digested, so it does not count as diet carbohydrates, Robert. It does not cancel out other carbs, though. 20 total grams carbs, 10 sugar, 10 fiber, you still have 10g carbs there, as far as your diet. Too bad that fiber doesn’t cancel out other carbs!
Thanks Doug!
I was thinking that should be the case. But pretty much all I ever hear is how you can count out the fiber and use net carbs. What I never hear is that you can’t use those carbs to negate other carbs.
Welcome! I’m a forum newbie as well. You didn’t mention fasting in your post, just thought I’d mention that as something to research as a compliment to the keto diet. Gets you into ketosis quickly and has a whole mess of other benefits (which you can probably find in this forum)! Hope you find quick success and long-time happiness with this lifestyle.
Thanks but yeah i fast 14 hours and have three meals… I will move to 16 hours in 2 weeks and in three months i will fast for 20 hours and have 1 meal.
So what you are looking for is Net carbs every day, to check Net carbs if the label says for example
Carbohydrates: 17 grams
Fiber: 8 grams
simply subtract the fiber from the carbs and you get your net carbs, as fiber is not digested and is simply used to move waste through your digestive system slower, allowing better intake of vitamins and healthy fats, but fiber goes out with the waste. I count every gram of sugar as 1 carb however and that keeps me in balance.
Darn it! That means I have been doing right all along. I was hoping I could use added fiber like a magic bullet to bring down the net carbs of a meal.
You’ve been doing it right? What a shame!
Here’s some bacon to help cheer you up:

Uhg… caught me in the middle of a miniFast. [palms the bacon and slips into his pocket]
