What do you guys think of this new documentary?!? All I have to say is WOW?!?!
New documentary
I have it running in the background at work… ~1/3rd the way through. It’s tough to listen to critically. However, They say carbs are good, processed meat and fats are bad. They’re mixing cancer, CHD (coronary heart disease) and diabetes almost interchangeably. One guy describes the symptoms of insulin resistance w/o calling it that and getting to the cause, a hormonal imbalance caused by persistently bad dietary choices (carbs-> elevating BS->elevating in blood insulin). It’s kind of like saying the reason the plane crashed is gravity overcame the lift provided so the we need to put bigger wings on those planes. Where a detailed review might have shown the wings were icing and over time the icing caused lift problems leading to insufficient lift… Solution: de-ice the wings…
So far it analysis seems a bit superficial w/o really digging into root cause and thus reiterates traditional failed medical mantra: HCLF diet. That said, a ZERO fat high carb diet works for some. However, that is not what they are saying… With my metabolism if I follow their “medical advise” I’ll be a T2 diabetic in a few months tops.
“n=1” results:
All that said… I did a high complex carb, zero simple carb low fat diet and it did work… However, I was eating all the time. Cottage cheese and an orange for breakfast, a piece of fruit for a snack a couple of hours later, a small sandwich meat lettuce low carb shell for lunch, a piece of fruit later, a chicken Cesar salad for dinner and a bowl of veggies or melon as an after dinner snack. I was also coaching kids sports 3-4 nights a week and often a good hunk of Saturday in addition to a high stress white collar job. On after work coach time I HAD to eat a protein bar or something to “tide me over” till I could get dinner. I was also burning about 500-900 calories a day (more on the weekends) exercising (cycling). That was much better than the SAD diet. However, I’m keto now and my hunger is really low, I’m losing weight as fast or faster and my exercise is low compared to before because of injury. I ate a little too much (mostly keto) over the weekend playing with new sous vide toy and decided to blow off breakfast to “get back on track”. It’s really no big deal. Before in the morning I’d probably have eaten my keyboard if I missed breakfast.
So my n=1 “experiment” says what they are saying is possible but only in the extreme. I think none of them have ever tried keto or really dug in and understood the diet and hormonal interaction. I’m MUCH happier this way. My hunger pangs are soooo much better managed in keto.
First 20 mins for me was brutal… bacon bad, chicken bad… I was like WTF!!!
I’ve just watched the first half where we heard the case against animal products. Now for the second half where we hear the case in favour…
Okay, I skipped ahead. There was no balance. I got the impression that the film makers went looking for the answers they already knew, and found them.
WOW is right!!! I am now thinking of going Vegan!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I crack myself up.
What I can say about this film is that it’s great for the Vegan community. They (we) all have testimonials, research, studies, doctors, industries, etc. etc. that back up a certain way that you choose to eat. So, this is fine for the community that believes in that. It’s definitely not what I believe. What I do believe is that everybody has a right to their own opinions and making their own choices.
KCKO
Yup! I watched the rest while working and at times not completely focused on the details. It’s basically a vegan hit piece with zero balance. From what I’ve read if you have ZERO fats it will not provoke an insulin response. So their conclusions are sort of possible. Good luck getting the general populace to do this. Also, the one tear jerker gal went vegan and fasted… Yup!!! fasting is good for insulin levels also irrespective of dietary choice… They forgot to mention the sugar industry paying the Harvard boys to not find sugar the culprit in the American diet which influenced Ancel Keys.
All in all VERY ONE SIDED without any detailed analysis… The background on the “experts” also showed a one sided nature!
They were all over the place about environmental impact of the pork industry, chicken industry etc… Let’s dive into detailed studies and review merits of conclusions based on a scientific analysis of them and further define future work to be done.
The biological evolution was shit too! Canines are really helpful when you do not have opposable thumbs and big brains for tools and community hunting strategy. Also, if you listen to Chris McDougal and the Harvard boys the human body is optimized for endurance running to chase down prey which further negates to need for canines. In this case after a couple of hours the prey (a Gnu in the book for example) just gives up and literally dies from heat exhaustion. Hmmm… I wonder how much you need canines in this case…
Pieces like this drive me crazy. Mostly because the general populace will treat this like gospel science to validate their shit eating habits!
Thanks for the snapshop review – the video isn’t available outside the US, it seems. Now I know I can skip it!
