Net carbs question

#1

Where a food has more fibre than carbs that food is zero net carbs eg chia seeds. Can the fibre in the chia seeds be included when totaling net carbs for the day?

#2

Nope. It doesn’t cancel out the carbs in other foods you eat.

#3

Thanks, I had a feeling it was a stupid question

#4

There are no stupid questions here!

#5

It can’t have more fiber than carbs, because fiber is a carb.

You’re probably looking at a non-USA nutritional label, where the “Carbohydrates” listed are net carbs, so you wouldn’t do any subtraction.

#6

Yes, I am in Ireland.

The packet shows the nutritional values per serving (15g) as follows:

Calories 64
Fat 4.2g
Protein 2.9g
Carbs 1.3g
Fibre 4.9g

Oh dear :disappointed_relieved: It’s no wonder my weight loss is slow, I have been eating way over 20g net carbs :rage:.

I’ve just looked at MFP for the last few days and I’ve been carb ok apart from Saturday when I had a pizza (an unsuccessful cauliflower rice base). Phew…

Here’s what a USA label for Chia seeds looks like:

So, for a 13g serving size, about 1g net carb, similar to your product’s 15g serving size. The calories, fat, and protein are similar as well.

Thanks. I’m so glad that I now know this! I dread to think how many carbs I have been eating since I started in September

(Running from stupidity) #10

It matters not. You have learned an important thing. That’s what matters.

@Chipmunk Here is my answer:

I am in Ireland an I didn’t realize that the carb amount shown on labels is the net carbs. I have been happily deducting fibre from carbs and thought I was doing great . Now I really do feel stupid! I have been so good as well, not one waver since I started. Good job as I have been going over 20g net carbs regularly!

Thanks @juice

KCKO!

Keep going pal.

Have you been losing weight?

#13

Yes, I’ve lost 10lbs. I know that this isn’t to be sniffed at but I lost 5lbs in the first 2 weeks of Keto and the other 5lbs have yo-yo’d up and down over the last 5 weeks. I was getting frustrated because for the last 4 weeks I kept ending up back at 143lbs (my weight after the initial 5lb loss). I weighed 136.6 on Sunday and had gone back up to 138.4 yesterday. Today I am 137.4. So I am now accepting these fluctuations as I am going in the right direction. Fingers crossed now that I will not go over 20g net carbs a day I should see some results :crossed_fingers:

Great stuff. This means that you should see some promising results when you sort out the carbs.
