Negative keto comments

(Karen) #21

Yep, it’s saying stuff about the fat. My vegan daughter, who researches everything, read a lot about the Inuits. She’s a veterinary and doesn’t feel OK about the animal food industry. Eats fish though. She was actually receptive. Plus we had a great meal together. Me with a huge green salad with tuna and cashews. Sure didn’t look weird or unsafe.

Can I ever relate!!

Lots of folks ask me because my 55 pound weight loss and “spring in my step” can’t help but make an impression. I was at the doc a couple of weeks ago and he was positively giddy and the appointment went well (we’d discussed my obesity prior). My reply to folks has been that I’m not binge eating junk, and am generally “low-carbish”.

It goes further when I’m asked, and being I’m surrounded by vegan types I’m surprised I haven’t encountered more negativity…

I don’t care though as it works for me!

“That’s not safe” ( healthy, good for you) comments

"You’ll ruin your… Liver, kidneys, heart, cholesterol,

“You’ll lose muscle”

" I would never do something so gross (cultish, dangerous)

Im sure said as crappy carbage was being consumed…

Saw a crappy doc just before Christmas. She was running around like the sky was falling! “No, no, no, you must eat at least 45g of carbs with each meal” LMAO

I was told that I will get gout. I had to roll my eyes and ask for more butter for my hamburger, please.

My brother claims that eating Keto will damage my organs. Both he and my sister in law are diabetic and on Metformin. They’ve been eating vegan in hopes of treating their diabetes.

#28

Believe it or not, I just recently heard the “Dr. Atkins was obese when he died” myth. Talk about conspiracy-theory bullsh!t.

My diabetic friend also goes on about the only real longevity diet is vegan but it’s too hard for him so he’s waiting for gene therapies or alien miracles to save him. Otherwise he just gets a little more insulin… The dietary advice industry has long claws and has convinced the sick and the well that their conditions cannot be reversed and that extreme veggie diets are the only slim and unpalatable hope. Thanks ADA and your 7th day Adventist pals. :flushed:

Everyone has been very supportive of me except on Christmas, my sister-in-law’s husband said in an annoyed tone, “one piece of pie isn’t going to kill you just have it.” Like my not eating pie offended him somehow!

Telling someone about Keto is one thing, but try telling them about fasting.

I was listening to a holiday keto podcast and realized that I do not get it. Fortunately the worst that ever happens is before he went keto, H used to buy crap that he knew I liked. Since then he bought ice cream once, I gave him a look for eating it and told him I would not consider it. One of the kids ate it and he never tried again. Seriously, I am fortunate that no one pushes food on me. If anything the problem many pounds ago was my parents would give me a look if I wanted extra helpings of the cake cookies or pizza. This would make me feel very self concious but at least they thought they were trying to help. I am not sure how encouraging pie helps anyone or why they would care if you ate it? I would ask if they are a member of a snack food cult or something?

Yes, in this case I let H listen to a bunch of fasting pod casts. Now he considers it. When I first said people did not eat for days he simply did not believe me. Now he skips meals.

What I hate is when I tell them my diet, they look really confused, then say, oh it is Atkins and move on and have no more interest since every overweight person I know has tried Atkins at some point

My best friend who has done Atkins many times keeps trying this diet but doing it her way! Which does not work as she does moderate or high protein, higher carb and lower fat. She claims she loses nicely for a month or so. I keep pointing out that she ends up breaking it so it is not working. I keep trying to tell her that the point of this is you do not want to break it and you do not experience the same temptation after a month or so that you would on a moderate carb diet. She refuses to get and insists on stubbornly sticking to her version. She tends to be very all or nothing

My wife is not onboard with me fasting, but she understands my personality enough to know I am unable to take a more moderate approach :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

For everyone else, I just let the results speak for themselves.

You will be the best example for your critical family and friends.

Yeah, the “Atkins obesity myth” is still going strong. He actually weighed about 190, a very normal weight when he slipped on the ice. He massively retained water (Edema) as his organs shut down, so ignorant and unscrupulous people report this gain as obesity. Not a pretty sight, my father suffered this as part of his dying process.

“Is that how you usually make your decisions? 'Cause that’s a really low bar…”

[Seriously, wtf are people thinking when they say this kind of thing? And why does he care whether you do or don’t eat pie? Like there’s something aggressive about not putting something in your mouth…]

(Brian Chandler) #37

I often focus on describing it in the mainstream “healthy” sounding ways…
“I eat lots of rough fibrous greens like kale, spinach, rough lettuce. I make homemade dressings made with healthy fats and oils and to be sure it’s “clean” and no carbs. Plenty of fish like herring, mackerel, salmon, and sardines. Lots of pecans, walnuts, and avocado. I can’t have any carbs short of what’s in veggies. Half the plate should be green.”

…and then there eyes twinkle in amazement and they start asking, “what about pasta? can you have pasta?”, “what about crackers?”, “what about ice cream?”, and I go, “no. none of it.” Then it usually goes “wow, ok, I get it… so no sugars. I’m getting hungry, you want a sandwich?” facepalm lol “no, I can’t have normal bread.”

(Liz ) #38

I was in the recipe book section at B&N, overheard one young woman tell another “My friend is doing that Keto diet, he drinks, like, a whole thing of melted butter. It’s DISGUSTING.”

I’m like, I can’t listen to this slander, lol, I have to leave! I’m just about to go when she says to her friend:

“He did lose a ton of weight, tho.”

My God, a glimmer of hope!

While I understand the family was grieving and it is a horrible way to go, the way it happened did not preserve his legacy as far as the general public. For example, his treating physicians could have come out publicly to reinforce the idea that it was ice and not something else that caused his death.

Contrast this with Pritikin (HCLF advocate) who stipulated in his will that he wanted an autopsy to prove that his arteries were clear at the time of his death (Atkins may have had religious reasons for denying an autopsy), incidentally they were
