Needing advice from long term keto folks please

(Bubba) #1

Ok, so I’m around week 7 and I feel great but haven’t really had much luck in the weight or measurements department :confused:and trying to be optimistic here and give it time. The same 4lbs comes off, goes on…constantly that it’s frustrating. Don’t look at the scales right, check measurements…that’s not changed since day 1.

I have a couple of questions that I hope I can get some clarity on:

  1. Unfortunately, my frustration got the better of me and I cheated Friday evening. The odd thing is that I woke Sat morning feeling a little different…I didn’t want to eat - anything!!! This has carried on and it’s now the evening of day 2 and ive no hunger but just ate two spoonfuls of butter?! Could this be just some oddity from cheating or am I finally fat adapted??

  2. As I said, I’ve not really lost weight or measurements and ive been reading a lot on here lately until shock horror…yesterday I read an article about particular oils you must avoid in certain foods that I eat a ton of and love!:persevere:
These are (I’m in the UK) real hellmans mayo, lurpak butter and country life butter…I eat a load of these for my fats…please tell me this isn’t right???

You might want to quote the article. If they are referring to the spreadable versions of the butters, then yes, 20-40% may be vegetable oils, not butter but if you are using the block butter, then it is low fat propaganda BS. Eat away!

Hellmans (US Best Foods) is somewhat right from the oils POV (not the fat proportion) since the oils they use are the cheap, bad vegetable oils (even their Olive oil version since it is only about 5% OO). If you don’t eat too much you may not care but if you do you might want to look up real home-made mayo (or baconaise) which is not that hard to make and apparently much tastier. Keto recipes here and elsewhere.

Sorry to say, but Country Life is made with vegetable oils. This is not very Keto friendly even though it’s 100% fat.

But the good news is there are really tasty alternatives like Kerrigold butter. And others, but kerrigold is what I use. Don’t be afraid to leave a little out to bring it to room temperature so it’s spreadable.

It always takes me 6 weeks to start seeing the scale and tape measure move. Hang in there and keep doing what you’re doing, minus the cheats.

Good god, no the butter is spreadable not block (the rapeseed oil issue right?)and the mayo, well I think it’s over with - love the stuff too! Can’t believe I didn’t know this…I eat loads of all of these.
Thank you, I found the home made mayo recipe, I’ll give that one a try and pray it tastes like hellmans!!!

I’m around the 50hr fast mark, soon off to bed and still no hunger. My belly is making some odd noises now, not proper hunger growls, but I don’t feel hunger like a hunger pang would cause.
So I assume this is being fat adapted? Do I just carry on fasting until I’m running full force at the fridge?? I’m quite ready for any weight lost, if any, to come right back when I start eating again from what I understand. Any advice? Straight back to 3 meals or is there a process to follow?

(Raj Seth) #6

YES. YES. There is a process to follow. 3 simple steps. By Jason Fung
“Eat when hungry
Eat till satiety
DON’T eat when not hungry”

Done. Stick a fork in it. DONE. Don’t need anything else.

Of course, when I say eat I mean eat all your calories from FAT.
Minimal carbs (leafy greens) if you MUST
Middling proteins for maintenance (50-100gm)
All the energy needs - Fat

Did I say eat a ton of fat yet?:grinning:

My understanding is the disappearance of the old style hunger is the best sign of being fat adapted. This works even better when you have a lifetime supply of food stores within the body as fat (I do). Why would the body clamor for energy when it has all it needs already available in the internal larder? :grinning:

Thank you, fantastic!

I love this new feeling, very, VERY alien to me! Its day 3, think i’ll maybe just have an avocado at some point but no weight loss…then again, I haven’t been to the bathroom if you know what I mean, sorry. Perhaps the avocado might help with that!!! PLEASE!

(Bubba) #9

…oh and I have a good supply of food stores too! Haha!

One other thing, im assuming that I need to stay away from all spreadable butter, cause the oils are what make them spreadable? So anything block butter should be ok?

(Sarah Slancauskas) #11

I’m in the UK too. Yes stay away from the spreadables as they aren’t a pure food. I get unpasteurised butter from Sainsbury’s but I know Lidl sell a very tasty block of butter for under £2 and that is s safe one. Also Kerrygold. You can cook with clarified butter (ghee) too which Sainsbury’s sell and that’s absolutely lovely :yum:

(Bubba) #12

Thanks Sarah i’ll take a look, I think i’ll stick to block butter…I use butter for everything but maybe that’s where I have been going wrong using spreadable and store mayo, cause ive been doing this to the letter otherwise!

Have you been keto for long?

(Sarah Slancauskas) #13

Sorry for the late reply!
I’ve been following the keto diet for almost 8 weeks now. I’m mostly enjoying it, although found my exercise (resistance training and Hiit) suffered quite considerably with poor energy and performance so I’ve been tweaking things a bit to try and get my former ability back.
How long into this are you?

(Bubba) #14

About the same, 7 weeks or so. I’m fat adapted already but not a lot of energy to exercise (or the want) like everyone else reports. Progress is slow in terms of weight or measurement loss but I do feel better…fingers crossed.
Eating out is difficult around where I live, so sometimes I do feel a bit isolated when I’m out with others

Bubba, it took me 3 months to get real weight loss. The occasional outlier might take 6 months. It will happen eventually; some of us are unlucky and lose slowly. The outliers on the other end of the spectrum are those who lose 15 pounds in the first 3 weeks and newcomers to keto imagine this will happen to them, too.

I think I speak for a lot of keto eaters, who have been at it more than a year, that patience must be cultivated more than hacks or tweaks.
