Need reassurance!

I started lchf a month ago and IF just 10 days I’ve been fasting for 17-18 hrs zero food and liquid intake (religious reasons)! I usually break my fast with 2 glasses of water with apple cider vinegar at 7pm then a keto/lchf dinner online recipe (usually some protein, low carb veggies in some cream sauce. I don’t over eat) around 8pm then by 10 or 11pm I take a bullet proof coffee adding a lil whip cream, heavy cream, vanilla extract, butter and coffee! By midnight or 1am I’m not really hungry but I need to eat before I sleep so I don’t starve I usually do 3 boiled eggs, with a spoon of store bought mayo, a lil mustard and 2 small cucmber pickles. Sometimes I also munch on a few pepperonis and beef salami slices while I prepare the eggs!
My Keto test is usually on the darker purple side. I also drink a few glasses of water to catch up! Can someone please advice if I’m on the right track to loosing weight? I’m definitely under 25grams of carbs! Should I cut down on fats to lose more I haven’t really lost any weight maybe a half inch on my waist! I’m 4’11 and 135lbs that 150cm and around 62kgs. I use to log my daily intake to make sure I hit my macros always below the carb and fat and might be a lil over in protein!

Angie, you stated that you are 4’11" and 135 lbs.
How much weight do you want to lose?

(Angie) #3

Fiorella, I’d like to lose 12 to 15lbs

If you’re keeping your carbs low, and you’re testing dark on the pee strips - you’re on the right track!

Keep Keto simple: low carbs, moderate protein (scaled to your lean body mass) and eat fat til you feel full. Don’t overcomplicate things!

I’m just wondering why Im not loosing like the many success stories we keep reading! I’m also considering extended fasts to switch things up starting by 24hrs and then see how far I can go…

Do I still have to intake same amount of fat to maintain ketosis or I start cutting down ?

Note that sometimes eating LESS doesn’t necessarily mean you will lose weight. As @carl said on a recent episode of 2KD that sometimes you need to feast so that the body gets used to burning calories, then you fast and effectively freewheel for a bit as the body thinks you are going to be stuffing calories in and so burns body fat in preparation. The days where I lost most have always followed days where I ate quite a ‘lot’, I’m still n=1 experimenting to see what kinds of foods are affecting things for me.

You are definitely on the right track and @LouiseReynolds is right about keeping it simple.

You’ll hear a lot of people stressing “eat fat til you feel full”, but many, many people are still tied to a Calories In, Calories Out (CICO) mindset and think that if they restrict fat that they’ll keep their calories low and lose weight faster, and there can be a time for that AFTER your body is fully adapted to burning bodyfat, but people get overweight because their body is intentionally storing incoming calories as bodyfat, so you need to give your body time to get used to burning fat for energy and as that process continues, you can reduce the fat you eat and your body will provide the caloric deficit from bodyfat.

Yes, this happens for some people more quickly than others, but it’s really important that you avoid comparing yourself to others, and just know that this does work.

A ketogenic diet is a marathon and not a sprint.

THis can be a sign of dehydration. Darker is not necessarily better and shows potentially a large concentration - maybe because you are fasting with no liquids? The way to be sure is to look at the colour of you pee - the lighter it is in colour the better. I appreciate you fast for religious reasons with no liquid but you need to make doubly sure that you get enough water in when you are eating. There are two podcasts I think you would find useful.

This is the most recent 2KD podcast and is an interview with Megan Ramos. She discusses how you lose more and break plateaus by feasting HARD and then fasting. Great interview and really worth a listen.

http://2ketodudes.com/show.aspx?episode=58

The second is a Fasting Talk episode - in fact I would subscribe to all of these re fasting info - they mentioned fasting with no water.

http://www.fastingtalk.com/10-fear-of-fasting-lchf-on-non-fasting-days-adequate-calories-eczema-dry-fasting/

Hope these help. Remember that weight loss will be slow when you are so close to target weight. And do take heed of what the others have said about CICO. Calorie restriction WILL result in a plateau and make your life harder. Listen to Megan and “switch it up”!

In reading your post again, you’ve only just started lchf and fasting. I think you’re fasting way too early. Fat adaption needs to take time. My suggestion would be NOT to fast. You need more time to get your body adjusted to drawing on your fat reserves before fasting. What is important is that your body works on becoming more efficient with ‘fuel flow’ from your stored fat (you say you only have a few pounds to lose anyway), so don’t be too hard on yourself this early.

@Angieeeee I’m another small person (5’2") and agree with what @LouiseReynolds is suggesting. You’re relatively new to keto and 10-15 lbs. isn’t a lot of weight in the greater scheme of things, though it’s a lot of weight to those of us that fit into this category. When I started keto (over 2.5 years ago), I ate three meals, no snacks and nothing after 6pm. I did get a 14-16 hr. overnight fast and that was painless for me. I pretty much stick to that now since I’m at goal and bf is okay. Go slow and keep it simple to find what works for you.

Thanks everyone!! These are all great inputs… can someone elaborate on feast eating? Do I do it every few days ? does that mean eating all lchf with same protein carb ration? Or do I eat lots of healthy carbs?

I’m fasting because I have to and not because of the diet and I will have to fast for 60 days with a week breaks in between! but I’m definitely drinking more water than I usually would on non fasting days and my urine is light color so no dehydration . I also Mentioned details on what I ate because I wasn’t sure if deli meats are ok since they are processed I check labels and make sure there isn’t any starch added and sugar less than 1g
Also I love whip cream in my 1 coffee.
I’ll start watching the videos recommended
Thanks again for all the support

It’s definitely not about carbs, but eating nutrient dense with an abundance of fat and protein if that’s what your body is craving. The point is to break the cycle of eating lower calories where the body can begin to prepare for what appears to be a famine by reducing metabolism and feed it everything it needs to repair.

In other words, as @richard has mentioned on several occasions, when you restrict calories and/or nutrients, the body will postpone some of the rebuilding and repair that it would like to do, so when it detects all the incoming “good stuff”, it says, “game on” and starts building and repairing and avoids the metabolic slowdown at the same time.

Edit: There have been times when my feasting has resulted in many extra tablespoons of sour cream and/or avocado mayo which are almost 100% fat and other times I ripped into a raw ribeye like @Brenda!
