Navigating the Holidays

I still consider myself fairly new to the Keto lifestyle (started in May of this year). I haven’t intentionally had a “cheat” meal or day. In the beginning, my dad inadvertently dosed me with apple juice in some pulled pork and I’m not sure about the carb count in some prosciutto I had at a friends’ place, but that is about it. I track and weigh most everything (mainly because I was raised by an accountant and an engineer and I LOVE numbers, charts and graphs! Please don’t judge ). So far 60+ lbs down!

I am starting to think about the holiday season (Thanksgiving comes around a lot earlier in Canada). It was absolutely my favourite food holiday, pre-Keto. I have been thinking about how to navigate the meal. It will be with close family, all who know that my eating style has changed, but I don’t want them to feel uncomfortable. I have offered to bring some roasted brussels sprouts (cooked and topped with bacon, of course). The turkey is one challenge, my favourite food. My dad, who is the chief turkey roaster, always brines his bird in a delicious concoction of spices, salt, sugar and water. How do I account for the brine factor? Or do I? Do I just take the meal as a hit, jump back on the Keto train for the next meal? I will try to avoid obviously non-keto foods that I don’t particularly enjoy (mashed potatoes have always just been a vehicle for gravy), but allow my self the “treat” of gravy, brined turkey and a Keto-friendly-ish pumpkin cheesecake that I am planning on making?

I understand that only I can make the judgement call for myself, but I would love some first-hand experience and advice. Any tips? Thanks!

I would say enjoy family, friends and food. It is one day. Just pick and choose what you want to eat and get back to it the next day.

You might want to do some fasting even Intermittent fasting in the morning of the event. And you can always fast the next day and let the water weight go away.

I would eat a brined turkey without worries, so little of it stays in the bird. Your plan to take your veggie and dessert sounds like a good one. If there are other keto things like olives and salads with a vinaigarette . Even a small serving of gravy 1/4 cup or so would be ok. Just enjoy the holiday with family and friends. Concentrate on conversation with them. No one is going to be monitoring your plate anyway.

One of the things Dr. Fung and Megan stress life is for living, you aren’t going to have a perfect meal all the time, just do the feasting and get back to it. We all have to navigate holiday meals, weddings, reunion parties, etc.

Thanks! Life got busy, with summer I like to spend more time with my kiddo. Now that we are getting back into routine I wanted to check in. I really value all the wisdom on this board.

Just re listened to this one. There are some great tips on food and drinks in there. Worth getting this thread bumped back up in the que.
