Nausea with fasting

#1

I have been keto for about 4 - 5 months and I’ve been in ketosis for the whole time, but only fat adapted for about a month. It’s great and I am really appreciating the lack of constant, nagging hunger.
I’ve tried a few short fasts and I’m totally fine, other than some nausea. Hunger signals come and go (as does the nausea it’s not constant) but I could do without it. I’ve had nausea associated with hunger since well before keto.

Anyone have this? Any tips for overcoming it? I could fast way longer if it weren’t for this. Not that I"m really interested in EF, but I do like the idea of 2 or 1 meals a day and feel I could absolutely do that if not for the nausea. I’ve never actually barfed, but I sure feel like it.

Nausea, like all the other stuff, is a hunger symptom. So, if you have the other hunger feelings, you get to have nausea too. Consider getting extra water and electrolytes.

If you want to do IF, let it happen on its own. For your first meal, make it a big meal with the idea that it needs to feed you for most of the day at least. And then, don’t snack. Don’t eat at all unless you feel those hunger signals and, if you do, eat another decent meal. Eventually you’ll go longer and longer between the meals. Or, when you wake up, don’t eat immediately. Just eat when actually hungry. IF isn’t for calorie restricting and, if you’re hungry, eat like you mean it and don’t snack. You’ll get to the point where you are only eating when hungry versus because of boredom or anything else. But, you’ll probably always have nausea as a sign of hunger. My signs of hunger are a creeping migraine if I go too long and nausea along with salivating at the thought of food. I don’t get a growling stomach very often.

Thanks. I see. If it happens again, I’ll just eat  Easy

Check your intake, look for hidden carbs.

Why would hidden carbs cause anything? THis is well over 12 hours from my last meal, and there are no hidden carbs because I eat meat, greens and butter and only occasionally have almond butter or cheese, which I count.

@ketoteacher1 I also struggle with nausea while fasting. For me it’s an electrolyte issue. If I supplement with salt while fasting I feel better. I’ve learned that if I supplement with salt and eat avocados with my meals right before a fast I can fast much longer before I start feeling nauseous.

Salt kills the seasick feeling I sometimes get when I fast. A pink Himalayan salt crystal on the tongue and I get relief. I also get nauseated when I drink black tea on an empty stomach due to the tannins in case that’s relevant,

@LizinLowell I’m exactly the same with the tea. If I drink tea on an empty stomach I feel nauseous until I eat. That’s why I only do water when I fast; I drink neither tea or coffee.

I used to get nausea in the morning before I ate. With Keto I can go a few hours longer without the feeling.
