Nausea, right abdominal pain after meals

(Michael) #1

Hello everybody,
New here.

I am almost 39 years old, 6 ft 3" (192 cm), 160 lbs (73 kg), so rather thin.
No known insulin resistance/ pre-diabetes history.

I have gone on the keto diet about two months ago, after being low-carb paleo for about a year (on and off).

At first I had it quite easy aside from minor keto flu symptoms.
Then I felt really good - started to feel more energetic, less hungry - all the good stuff.

Then about a week or so ago I started feeling pain in the upper right abdomen - especially after meals but not only. Along with that I started to feel less energetic and overall a bit worse.
A few days ago I started to feel nausea after meals.
At first I thought it was too much fat, but this morning I drank some decaf coffee with around a spoon of butter and coconut oil each (which is less than I used to drink), and felt REALLY nauseated.
Also, the pain is now felt also on my left.
In addition, the last BM produced a grayish stool (sorry for TMI).

I am going to see the doctor and request a sonogram, because from all the things I’ve read, I fear maybe a gallstone has obstructed my bile duct.

Quite anxious here as I don’t want to quit keto, but I’m worried about the symptoms.

Any words of reassurance?

Thanks,
Michael.

Good luck.

(Omar) #3

if I may what is the stool color

(Michael) #4

Last time I visited the toilet, it was grayish in color.

(Omar) #5

let me tell you my experience which does not mean everyone is the same.

I quit coffee and all this gone in couple of days. decaf is even worse than cafinated.

In some people coffee interfere with some liver functions it is scientifically proven.

good luck

(Michael) #6

Wow, thanks!

I had no idea that decaf is detrimental to the liver.
Do you know if green tea is okay?

I will cut out the coffee completely and see how it goes.

Good luck.

If you’re feeling nauseous, it might be a sign that you could benefit from a small break from eating? Maybe try a 2 or 3 day fast. But if that pain keeps up, see the doc for sure.

(Michael) #8

Thanks Peter,
I will try that.
It probably won’t be that hard as the mere thought of food right now makes me nauseous…

(Carpe salata!) #9

Drink plenty of plain water, with some added salt if you want to try that.

I did my first fast after a couple of days of food poisoning where I couldn’t eat for 2 days. I then stretched it out to 5 and it was easy and helped a lot.

(Michael) #10

The only thing I’m concerned with regards to a prolonged fast is that I am quite thin (BMI 20).
I’m not sure if I can pull off a prolonged fast without much body fat…

I had a checklist getting ticked off as I read your post. All of those symptoms sound like stopped up bile duct, especially the grey stool.

I learn new things here all the time, bile function being one of them. A couple of years ago I didn’t have a clue as to what the gall bladders job was. I think you are on the right track with possible fall stone.

I honestly don’t know anything about the creation or removal of said stones. I would see a doctor ASAP about it. The first thing I’m sure they will ask is what’s your diet like? And then tell you that’s why you have a stone blobbing the bile. I’m still in the getting new information phase about gall bladder, so this is interesting to me.

I suggest finding out what causes the creation of those stones. My gut feeling is there is more than one way to create them, similar to kidney stones.

Talk with your doctors as soon as possible.

Yes, agree-please see a doctor! Something’s up.

Bile is what adds the brown color to poop. Without it you can have gray colored stools. Go see a doctor, you may have gall stones or a blocked bile duct. That could explain the pain and nausea.

(Amy) #14

Yep, sounds very much like a blocked bile duct. It makes sense that a high-fat diet would cause the gallbladder to empty more often, so if you had gallstones hanging out in there, more fat could flush them out and cause them to lodge in the duct. Sonogram sounds like a good idea. I don’t see any reason to quit keto, unless sonogram shows more stones waiting to be flushed out. There is a drug that breaks up gallstones, as an alternative to removal, if needed.

I found this on Diet Doctor: https://www.dietdoctor.com/gallstones-and-low-carb

It’s not a substitute for seeing the doctor, but since the you are wondering about gall stones, I thought this was informative. Best wishes! Sounds like they are more common on low fat/high carb diets.

As someone who had their gallbladder removed , the symptoms i experienced early on included

-pain in the upper right side(just under the ribcage)

  • pain that went from the right side and stretched across to the left side and pain that went from my right side and began to wrap around my right side.
  • nausea after eating that would last several hours
  • indigestion- lots of burping
-the pain felt like it was a burning pain when i had it
-bloating(felt like i was stuffed all the time)
  • episodes always occured right after meals

Late stages that i was really in trouble

  • i had nausea and pain regardless of weather i ate
  • i would sweat profously and my heart rate would climb.
  • severe pain that would not go away with tylenol or advil

I did what the Doctor suggested…he told me to cut out ALL the fat in my diet and so i lived Fat Free diet. BUT it made no difference when it progressed. I lived off of popsicles and gingerale for 2 months before i finally had surgery.

When they did the surgery… they saw that my gallbladder was full of stones and sludge and there was a gallstone caught in the bile duct.

This, my friend is serious! You need to see a Doctor immediately… heres why!

If a gall stone exits the bike duct and travels to the pancreatic duct and gets stuck… you will develop acute pancreatitis which can in fact cause death. You will develop an infection and then eventually sepsis or you will experience necrosis(death) of the pancreatic tissues. My friend almost died of pancreatitis. The pain is excruciating!!! So please please please do not delay in getting a Doctor to see you.

And yes…do an ultrasound… I had perfect bloodwork and a perfect CT scan… the only way they were able to detect mine was through ultrasound. Thats why i got stuck waiting for 2 months in the ER every night.

Thanks everybody for your input.

I saw the doctor yesterday. She didn’t seem concerned.
But then again, I don’t consider her to be a good doctor (she is replacing for my doctor who is currently ill).

She did send me to do a sonogram but the appointment is only next week.

I wonder if I should wait that long or just go to the ER already…
My pains have not intensified, and they haven’t been that strong to begin with.

The only thing is that my appetite is really low.
Yesterday I drank some bone broth apart from the keto coffee that morning.
Today I ate a small green salad with a bit of olive oil and ACV.
I worry that I don’t get nearly enough calories as I should.

Should I go off keto until I get this matter sorted out?

If you experience jaundice, signs and symptoms of an infection somewhere (high fever, chills, sweating, n/v) or severe pain or weakness then you should go to the emergency room, yes.

(Michael) #19

Definitely none of that.
And if that were to happen, I would head straight to the ER.

BMI 20 should not be doing much fasting. When I did it I had plenty of fat reserves and all my symptoms were gone from the food poisoning in 2 days. I agree with the comments about getting medical tests stat if your symptoms seem prolonged and interfering with your eating. Get well soon.
