My ketone level suddenly changed

(Sue) #1

It has been a month since I started the Keto diet. I lost 10 lbs and never cheated.
1140 calories a day. I’m eating 5% carbohydrate. I’ve been working out for 30 minutes every day since last week.
But since yesterday, my ketone level suddenly dropped.

I was always 2.5~3mmol, but it suddenly became 4.9mmol since yesterday. I’m so worried.

I eat the same food and go on a strict diet. And I sleep well 7 hours a day.

There are two things that have changed.

  1. The ketone test strip has been replaced. (Keto-Mojo)

  2. I started eating DHT Blocker & Hair Growth Capsules. I’ve lost my hair for the past few months and I thought this was helpful. I’m not sure if it contains carbohydrates.

Will the changes above affect the ketone level?

Thanks

Your ketone level is more typical of fasting than of nutritional ketosis, but there is no particular reason to worry. If you changed test strips, there are two potential explanations: first, the new batch might not be properly calibrated to your metre, and second, the batch could be defective (it occasionally happens). In any case, a level of 4.9 is not particularly of concern.

Hair loss is common on all diets, not just keto, but being sure to eat enough will help minimise it. Hair loss and nail growth are two processes that the body cuts back right away when we eat short rations. Unless you are eating to satiety, and have a very large amount of excess stored fat to shed, eleven hundred calories is not much food.

Did you recalibrate your meter with the chip that comes with each batch of test strips?
