As you all probably know, once you’ve reaped the benefits of this lifestyle, it’s hard not to evangelize. I have resisted that, but today I finally got a teaching moment.
I mentioned on another social site, ravelry.com, that I had lost 25 pounds so far eating ketogenicly. And someone asked me about it, bwah ha ha
They asked, “What wonderful results especially the diabetes, are you and your husband following the same diet? Reason im asking is i have been researching keto there are so many it gets a bit overwhelming…”
My response:
We are following the same guidelines:
NO grains, starches, seeds, nuts, seed oils, or sugars.
0 to 20 g of carbs. I go as close to 0 as posible because of the diabetes, he’s a little more lenient
Moderate amount of protein.
Lots of saturated fat, bacon, rib eye & chuck steak, baby back ribs. Also olive oil.
I eat way more calories than I ever did before, but since meat and fat have little if any impact on insulin (the hunger and fat-storing hormone), my body doesn’t store the excess calories, I’m losing weight at a healthy rate, and I’m getting less insulin resistant.
Eating 1-3 times a day, all within a 5-8 hour time-frame, no snacks. Doing this reduces the amount of times my body produces insulin, so is helping with insulin sensitivity.
The best books I’ve read:
The Diabetes Code by Dr Jason Fung (a nephrologist in Toronto, Ontario)
Lies My Doctor Told Me by Dr Ken Berry (a no-nonsense family physician in Tennessee)
YouTube videos, anything by either of the 2 doctors above, as well as Megan Ramos
Social media site I use is ketogenicforums.com I’m DeeCS on there. I love the different viewpoints on this forum. They also have a section called Show Me the Science where there are links to studies published that you can read for yourself and make your own conclusions. I’m very much NOT a blind follower. If someone tells me something that I should do, they darned well better back it up with proof, lol.
