My fat feels different

(Liz) #1

Listen I feel crazy for saying this, I really do- but I’ve always been familiar with the feel of my fat. Now, I’ve lost 25 pounds and I’ve gone touch tests all the while but the last day I touched my stomach and it’s like… fluffy. It feels softer and less dense. It’s different and not in a “hey I’ve lost weight” kind of way- I’ve gotten used to that, cool as it is.

Anyone else notice their stomachs feeling a different consistency? Is this normal?

I’m not sure this is what you mean but my fat is definitely squishier with the weight loss. I surmise it is depletion of stored glucose within the fat cells. Since you no longer consume sugar and your body has depleted what it had saved, the firmness of the fat cells are deflated. The fat cells are still there but aren’t bloated. This is part of the reason people do extended fasts in an effort to let autophagy discard those old cells and replace them cells with new ones. You get to get rid of that Dunkin danish from 10 years ago and replace them with good healthy cells the body can utilize. As the old fat cells get replaced and the new ones that haven’t been all stretched out get burned for energy, the sponginess will (hopefully) firm up.:worried:
This is a less than scientific explanation but gets the point across as to how I explain in my mind what is going on.:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I think you deplete glycogen fairly quickly (I can’t remember if it is stored in adipose tissue or just muscles) but in the medium/long term, I think it might be more to do with releasing the lipids in the fat cells and replacing them with water or nothing at all. That would deflate the structure of the fat cells since as you said, they are not actually destroyed, only emptied (except the small % of programed apoptosis (?) and replacement with new).

The other thing is what I have which is that I am now grabbing a higher proportion of skin (loose, horrible skin) with not even that many fat cells to give it structure?

Yes it’s normal - it’s SQUISHaaaaay as fat cells change out fat for water over weeks - and then swoosh goes the water and one has less fat in that spot. I find measuring to be a wonderful way to document it every month or so - to confirm that I am not imagining the squish-to-swoosh thing. It’s different than excess skin which is also very real for those who lose lots of fat (which apparently the body deals with over time with a well-formulated keto lifestyle, and/or 3 day fasts for autphagy and/or collagen intake).

If you haven’t seen it yet, Nurse Cindy’s community education video on this is really entertaining:

Yeah my stomach used to be fat and almost hard… or firm… but now I got a squishy little stomach that is shrinking by the day.

Very interesting sir

my wife likes to rub on my stomach :joy:

she said it is much softer and little smaller

Yup, I noticed the fluffy, squishy belly, too! I’m thinner, the waist of my slacks is loose, but what is there is “jiggly”. But as long as it keeps diminishing, I’ll take it!

Yes !!! I noticed this myself recently!!! I have always had a lot of hard heavy fat around my belly (suffered terrible digestively) and since giving up grains sugars and going Keto for 7 months (I’m down over 50lbs) now it’s all soft and squishy and light and shrinking! I just keep standing in the mirror and squeezing it because it is just so weird! Lol Also my Ab muscles are starting to show which I haven’t seen in almost 20 years …,.This has been with no added exercise either! It’s kinda hanging pretty loose now tho and I need to tighten it up so I’m gonna start with Ab/ core exercises.

LORT! I thought it was just me! Glad to see so many others are noticing the same thing. I too, notice my ab muscles are starting to show thru! And I love it! Still, I notice that even with fat to spare, as squishy as it is, it seems to be lifting back into it’s rightful place. No rolls anymore! I do go to the gym. My reasoning was to tone and tighten my excess skin during this weight loss process. 3-5 times a week (usually 3) for me for the last year. Love the change. Love the Ketogenic Lifestyle. Super stoked about my new size 12s! Raided my skinny mini Mama’s closet last week! First time since I was 12 yrs old!

UPDATE… I’m a size 10 comfortably now. Breaking a 10 day water fast Sunday. Down 11 lbs in 9 days. Finally within 10 lbs of my goal weight!
Looking at previous pictures, I realize not only my fat is different, and lifting back in to place, so are my boobs! Never thought that would happen!
Keto has proved to be the best thing I’ve ever done for my life! Slow and steady wins the race!

Thank you for this! I lost 3 pounds in the first week of keto and now, 7 weeks in, I’m still more or less the same weight. My waist diminished slightly, but now it seems that my fat came down in my thighs…they became fatter and squishy! I don’t really understand the reason for that (my wishful thinking was that the fat just slides off my body, through my thighs, then my feet and in the ground :joy: but I guess that’s not a thing). This gives me hope for a swoosh sometime in the future

In a size 12, uncomfortably. Man! All my fault! Lost my dedication. Still eating keto. Occasional cheat meals, maybe one meal a week. Exercise is lacking. Dedication to everything is lacking. Need to find a reset button!

I’ve never thought about it, but this is probably why it’s so much easier to “tie the shoes” shortly after starting KETO.

This video is so helpful! Thank you.
