My experiment into off plan eating after 9 yrs. on plan

(Cathy) #1

I am just back from a 2 week vacation and experiment. I went to Greece and Croatia and decided that after almost 9 years of pretty much 100% keto, I would eat off plan for the whole 2 weeks and I did.

I did NOT eat sweets but everything else was fair game. I did fast from bed till afternoon frequently but not every day. It worked out really well in that I did not feel ill or lose my energy.

Now home and weight is up by 3 lbs. and ketones, believe it or not are 0.6 fasting blood ketones.

If I had attempted this in the first year of keto, I would have been sick (digestive issues) and likely would have lost all the benefits of keto. I can’t explain why I am still in ketosis. I tested the first morning back and again this morning. The day prior, I had eaten more carbs then all other days.

This is day 2 of back to keto and I am not experiencing any withdrawal symptoms. Keto eating is second nature to me and I have a ‘clean’ household but I am not tempted. I can only conclude that almost 9 years of clean eating has allowed my physiology to heal and somehow kept me able to maintain my ketosis.

Yipppppeeeeee!

Your minor gain is just water. You’re fine. Two weeks is not long enough to experience a significant amount of lipogenic readaptation, especially if you were not massively overeating. If anything, it was a positive for your metabolism.

If you wanted to, and I’m not suggesting this, is eat lipolytically for a week or two, then do it all over again with no negative effects.

I am hoping this is the case.

And that’s what its all about. Having metabolic flexibility!

I’ve had the same experience this past week! I’m still blowing my usual “.2 or .3” in the morning and evening. It’s not any different than when I’m eating Keto/low carb.
This next week I plan on doing Keto Monday through Friday and then having a “carbier “ weekend—keeping the fats much lower on those 2 days. I have a post in the n=1 where I’m keeping a log. I’m also fat-adapted and not a Type 1or2 diabetic.
Thank you for sharing. Btw I’d be interested in seeing how long is takes for your weight to drop…because I’m nosey and curious

I will post! I am nosey too!!! LOL!

It has been 2 weeks now since my return to my standard keto. 2 things of note.

I have maintained my weight within my usual couple of lbs…

I developed a toothache a few days after returning. It developed over a few days but then subsided - now entirely. Is this because of my diet???
