My big body experiment!

Hello everyone!

I have been on keto for four months now and I only have 8 pounds to lose!
For a long period of time I have had no appetite on keto/IF and even though people say it’s perfectly normal, I didn’t lose weight or get all of my nutrients… Now I have decided to contact a keto coach and he told me that 1100-1300 calories was way too low. He gave me this explanation:

Keto makes you eat less than you need as it mimicks starvation and when you are actually starving your hunger goes away for a few reasons. Teh evolutionary reason is because a hungry hunter is a distracted hunter is a dead hunter. Physically it is because leptin signals stop and this makes hunger go away. This is bad. It causes you to under eat and become malnourished.
You should be eating a minimum of 1800 cals a day. That is what is recommended by any countries Nutritional guidelines for a healthy adult woman 1200 cals is what a 6 month child is supposed to eat.

(This was absolutely not what I was used to be told) - But whatever I have nothing to lose and I’ll give it a try!

Afterwards he told me that I should up my calories to above maintenance (2200-2300) for two weeks to get my metabolism back! and YES I will gain a little bit of fat but weight loss will become easier…

So now I’ll have to eat over 200g of fat per day for two weeks, so I can get my appetite back and lose weight more easily… it’s a scary step to take so please wish me good luck!:flushed::flushed::flushed:

K
Good luck!

Question for you: what is the problem you are trying to solve with this Keto coach? I am not at all sure about what he’s told you. Do you feel like you are undereating because you are not hungry, is that the problem?
Cheers

Personally I’m not intensely focused on calorie counting; but I have to ask what your Basal Metabolic rate is…

Surely all you have to do (very generally speaking) is eat a similar amount of calories to your target Basal metabolic rate? Perhaps then add resistance training to lean up with some fasting here and there to push through barriers?

Yo-yoing calories like that sounds like an extreme measure?

Yes - I am pretty sure that I’m undereating and I haven’t been able to lose weight for a long period of time now.
I’ll see if this will get my metabolism back on track.

My TDEE is between 1700-1800 and I’ll up my calories to 2200-2300 (I’m only counting calories to make sure that I get enough)
A guy have made a more extreme experiment with this and he ate 5000+ a day for 21 days - Keto.
He only gained 1.3 kilos…

Another fun fact:

in 1940s the average man weighed 160lbs and the average woman weighed 120-140lbs. They ate an average of 3,000 and 2,500 calories per day respectively.

Today the average man weighs 200lbs and the average woman 165lbs. They now eat 2,500 and 1800 calories respectively. What is wrong with that picture? Funny isn’t it. We never had an issue with weight until someone figured out how to measure calories in food.

I think this is an important topic because I see so many people who only eat 800-100 calories a day…

I freak out when I hear the word apetie.

I do not want to go into apetie loss it is very hard to gain it back for me.

I hope it is not like that for you.

Thanks for the interesting info; I think it just goes to show it’s not the amount of calories but the type of calories that are important?

Good luck with the experiment!

(Kathrine) #8

yeah, this is how I feel right now :)… But that’s exactly why I’m making this experiment
For how long time have you tried to get it back?

(Kathrine) #9

it is, but it’s still important to get enough :)! Thank you!

That was back in my late 20s. I am 60 now.

I remember it took me maybe three month to get to the point that I realy enjoy to eat.
