My 80yr old Dad

(Wendy) #1

My Dad has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. He is obese. He sits at a computer screen all day unless my Mum takes him out and he drinks - a beer and bottle of wine every night.

They got a fright when he got the diagnoses and saw a nutritionist…his glucose is 6.7 and his “cholesterol” high. So she gave him a diet plan…can you guess whats on it?

Brown rice
Brown bread
Fruit
Low fat everything
Red meat once a week
More fish and chicken.
:woman_facepalming:

She did tell him to cut down the alcohol.

I am wondering how I can introduce KETO, walks, sunlight and more into his life. Wonder if I should even try?

You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.
You can’t help your dad unless he wants help.
You can try and convince him not to eat rice and grains and enjoy all the fatty things in life instead like bacon and eggs.
I understand you wish to help him, but a big part about changing your lifestyle is WANTING it.

I’d be inclined to give it a go if only for your own sake - you’ll know that you did your best. Maybe discuss it with your mum but just be prepared to be rebuffed.

Sorry your dad is so poorly.

Thank you Safi.

I tried to have that conversation with my mother who is 78 but still sharp. She has a spinal condition called Syringomyelia. It is really starting to debilitate her. I figure since keto is anti inflammatory it could only help her condition. Her doctor even told her to eat low carb.

I told her if she lowers carbs she needs to up her fat or protein. She is totally fat phobic so that’s why I said upping either one. She won’t do it. I think eating low carb to her means pretty much just eating less. :pensive:

TBH, that does happen for a lot of people, so she’s pretty right

I disagree in the circumstance of my mother. She is eating fewer carbs but not upping fat or protein. That just means less calories and slower metabolism. Also, fewer carbs for her still means half an English muffin in the morning with breakfast or half a Costco muffin.

Who knows, maybe those changes will help, but I believe it’s the actually being in ketosis that really makes the diet anti inflammatory. She will not be in ketosis. She’ll probably be in low carb purgatory.
