MTOR - Mechanistic Target Of Rapamycin in Growth and Health

science

#1

MTOR is a large protein molecule that acts as a sensor and regulator in cells to activate growth or to signal cell recuperation and autophagy clean up based on availability of nutrients.

So many threads about nutritional health come together in this story. It gives deeper meaning and understanding to low carb healthy fats eating.

To get to MTOR we work through reverse pharmaceutical science from a soil substrate that seemed to be an effective fungicide to a cutting edge cancer treatment. Once humanity had rapamycin it led us to the hidden protein and a whole new physiological pathway that led some to a Nobel Prize (for autophagy)

This podcast episode makes a nice complement to the Radiolab story:

Sirolimus, also known as rapamycin, is a macrolide compound that is used to coat coronary stents, prevent organ transplant rejection and treat a rare lung disease called lymphangioleiomyomatosis. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirolimus)

There are other MTOR threads in the forum as well with all the little wiggles where people try to fit it in their paradigms.

Have a listen to the Radiolab story. I think they tell it really well. Then get thinking about time restricted eating, appetite suppression, exercise and autophagy, healthy aging.
