Morning Coffee Response- BS and Ketones

#1

Hello all- I set out to test my insulin response to Stevia; and found something else, interesting. I thought I would share this for those newer to Keto; and invite any commentary from the oldies/experts.

My morning routine includes a cup of coffee- simple dark roast, with 1/2tbsp of butter and 1tbsp of Heavy Whipping Cream, and a small shot of liquid Stevia. I had been burned before on a HWC that listed carbs (I failed to notice). Thus I switched to a brand which listed 0 carbs.

So I did the Blood Glucose and Ketone Curve as described below:

T0= BG = 75 Ketones = 0.5
T30= BG = 84 Ketones = 0.7
T60= BG = 94 Ketones = 0.7
T90= BG = 86 Ketones = 0.5

Naively, I believed, I wouldn’t see a BG elevation bc my ingredients claimed no carbs. To me it looks like a normal meal response. I was expecting to see stable BG and perhaps a drop- suggesting the stevia had triggered an insulin response. I am going to run another test, at some point; but put the stevia in water. Hopefully, that will give me an objective result.

Please feel free to comment or critique.

Anybody know- Are there any HWC 's that are recommended as having fewest carbs?

The only thing I would add is that those last 3 readings are within the +/- error rate of most home test units.

You also need a control. Repeat the same test while consuming nothing at all at the same time of day and then perhaps a day with nothing but the same volume of jut hot water. It might also be a good idea to have the same dinner at the same time the evening before. Repeat multiple times and then take the median datum to help eliminate noise from daily variability.

Good point!

I only took one ketone level; but averaged 5 readings on the BG readings. Interestingly, I found the 5 readings at each time point were all pretty close; but there was some variation.

Thanks!

I think I see what you mean. I’ve been tracking BG and Ketones for awhile- and definitely notice a lot of daily variability. I generally eat two meals a day and they are pretty similar composition; no snacks, just black coffee and water. I feel like I get pretty close to expected readings now- most of the time.

I was most interested in the Stevia- Insulin response. Do you think I can just do the same curve with the Stevia water sample?

Yes … that was easy :slight_smile:
