More hospital woes

So I’ve been admitted to hospital with my tenth bout of pneumonia (I’m looking into an award for this!) and of course my blood sugar is high because of the infection. I haven’t eaten for three days (bonus fast) but now that I’ve been moved to the ward the inevitable discussions about my eating habits has begun culminating in mutterings outside my room between the nurse and the woman delivering breakfasts:

“She says she won’t eat carbohydrate”
“Is toast carbohydrate?”
“Yes”
“What about cocoa pops? Or I could give her a diabetic jelly?”

This is the point at which I call out:

“I’m happy to keep fasting.”
“How long have you been fasting?”
“Three days”

Collective gasps of horror now ensue!
On the plus side the nurses have mostly been really supportive and my husband will bring me food later today.

The dialogue is hilarious but why you are there is not. Hope you get better soon.

I am over the moon - news must have reached the dietician about the recalcitrant patient so she came to speak to me and… was really nice and helpful. She asked what I could eat and organised poached eggs and steamed fish (I didn’t push the fat as I may or may not have organised a secret butter stash to come in today.

So word is getting out there. She didn’t seem surprised when I explained the reasons for following this diet. People like Gary Fettke and Richard Morris are making a big difference here in Australia and I for one are extremely grateful.

When I was in a rehab facility in 2016, the staff dietitian came to talk to me when I said I was a type 2 diabetic and eating keto. She was very understanding and accommodating. However, the chef didn’t get it. I was getting platefuls of low carb veggies, mostly broccoli and over-cooked green beans. I usually need butter, maybe cheese, to go with them to make them palatable. But the entire kitchen was completely focused on low fat – butter substitutes only, fake cheeses to lower the fat, chicken breast only, etc.

After the chef visited me, I got some very good meals (but never any real butter). He even special ordered some chicken thighs for me. And offered me egg salad any time I wanted it (the regular daily offering was tuna salad, which I’m not fond of).

But he had been concerned before that, because most of my meals were being returned uneaten.

When I was in the hospital before rehab, most of the normal options tasted terrible. But they did have a shrimp and veggies stir fry and a Caesar salad with shrimp. Both had many large shrimp on them and were delicious, so I had a lot of shrimp during that week. The “Veggies” in the stir fry were different almost every time, but usually one or more low(er) carb veggies – broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, onions, green beans, …

I hope you heal quickly! I am sorry that you are dealing with this, pneumonia sucks. Good for you for sticking to your plan even when feeling like crap.
