More calories equals decrease in ketones?

I increased my daily calorie intake (400 calories), not changing my macro’s, and my ketone readings went from 3.8 mmol to 1.6 mmol! Is this normal? More calories decreasing ketones?

Though it’s not PC to say among LC enthusiasts, calories do matter. Especially for women, middle (and senior) age folks, and those who are metabolically deranged.

I know from personal experience that my state of ketosis is effected by caloric intake. I haven’t seen any scientific studies or read any blogs about it, but I can get kicked out of ketosis by eating too many calories.

There are a few popular threads on this forum by folks who have reported eating massive calories without any ill effects. And while this may be true for them, it’s certainly not applicable for many here. Hopefully this thread will gain some traction and provide counter balance if other folks chime in and report their findings similar to what you and I have experienced.

My ketones fall or rise by how much I’m eating or restricting food though when fasting if my energy is dropping I can consume a few hundred calories of coconut oil without a noticeable impact on ketone level. Otherwise I rarely eat pure fat and my diet is too varied to accurately compare one day to another. And other things can impact ketone levels such as sleep, stress, sickness, exercise, temperature, etc. making it hard to isolate the impact of foods.

It depends whether the increased calories were in the form of carbs, protein or fat. Increasing carbs will definitely reduce production of ketones, could even kick you out of ketosis. Increasing protein may decrease ketones whereas an increase in fat calories is unlikely to decrease ketones.

Sorry. But sometimes it is well worth it to bump a thread. I want to hear more.

I have noted that some of the older threads never took off. And not for lack of subject matter. Maybe just the sheer volume of users now.
