Modern Day Hunter - Gatherer.
Here in the UK, (I have been Cumbria based for the last 25 years or so). I mainly hunt in Tesco, but also hunt and gather in Morrisons, Asda, Sainsburys, Aldi, Lidl.
I don’t think I have left out any other major hunting grounds, in West Cumbria, but if I have, beg pardon. I would imagine The Lake District would have been one the best places in the UK for hunters, in days gone by. Many ancient Stone Circles give testimony to this, Castlerigg, Long Meg, Swinside, etc etc. And the beautiful landscape, won’t have changed much.
I have swapped my spear for a shopping basket, but it’s hunting non the less.
It’s best to hunt for Bargains/kills late afternoon, lot’s of meat and fish have the yellow stickers on and have been often vastly reduced to half price and less.
Hunting at later times you can come across even better bargains / kills. But many other hunters will snatch the kill from your hands, can be quite dangerous.
But you must acknowledge, those arriving to catch the best bargains are well seasoned hunters and usually in much more need than yourself for finding such a kill. So do take a step back, out of respect for such hunters and let them take the kill. We can easily wait, because we are fat adapted.
Today, I caught a massive salmon at Morrison’s, half the original £7 per kg, the fishmonger also filleted said fish.
Just eaten a large portion fried in Kerrygold, ( I am Zero Carb) , the rest in the freezer. I happily reflect on such a good hunt as I am sure my ancestors did. Tomorrow I shall hunt pork, or steak.
First call, to the Tesco Forest, and from there, to search the undergrowth of Morrison’s, Asda and Aldi vast green oasis etc etc.
Now I know these are not the most favoured hunting grounds, but for some these are all we have.
For those in doubt, said with the intentiion to raise a smile.
