Milk for ketogenic?

(Jooyoung Kim) #1

Hi guys

How’s it going with your ketogenic journey?

I’m curious as to… can I have milk during keto diet? I am really fond of milk tea… (and I just had it at office this morning). Is it okay to have milk during ketogenic diet?

In addition…

I have a friend who has a quite a problem with diabetes… He has diabetes type2 and sometimes he looks quite sick. Also has some digestion problem related to diabetes. Is it safe for a diabetic patients to do ketogenic diet? I am concerned about his health… and am curious if I can recommend keto diet for him. Thanks!

Real (full fat) milk and real tea mixed together in small amounts are probably fine - just watch the carbs. Pre-made things that call themselves “milk tea” probably are hiding sugar in the label (with other names) or cutting carbs with artificial sweeteners - all bad news. Even unsweetened pre-made milk teas are probably pasteurized enough to have a 2019 use by date - again, pretty much not food. I am not familiar specifically with milk teas but a lot of dairy products (other than plain old milk) are pasteurized and have chemicals added to really extend shelf life. I think, if the use by date can be months away, skip it.

The usual advice around here is YES - a diabetic should move to keto (better yet fasting) to lower their insulin and hopefully reverse their diabetes. Of course, only under a doctor’s care (to correctly lower the drugs currently being used to try to control the diabetes and watch blood pressure) and especially under a doctor’s care if they seem outwardly sick.

I’ll add a little to this - tell your friend to watch Dr Sarah Hallberg’s TedX talk on YouTube, and if they are interested, to listen to the first 3 or 4 “2ketodudes” podcasts (go to the forums homepage and click the ad there for easy navigation). That will help him understand how it works and give him a “QuickStart.”

just use a splash of HWC instead of milk. Or try unsweetened almond milk

1 cup (8oz) of milk has 13g of sugar. So no, it’s not a “good” option on a ketogenic diet.

A small amount could be OK if it fits in to your daily carb limit.

I’d try heavy whipping cream or unsweetened almond milk and see if those work for you.

Several people have mentioned heavy cream and almond milk, but I wanted to mention a combo of the two that a genius in these forums talked about in another recent thread. I tried it and it is amazing; the best milk substitute that I’ve had on keto. For each cup I would probably use about 3/4 cup of almond milk (unsweetened, of course) and 1/4 c heavy cream.

I made hot cocoa with this the other night (just added cocoa powder and erythritol) and it was wonderful.

I just discovered the joys of unsweetened almond milk myself. It is cheaper than cow’s milk and tastes wonderful. I have not tried it in tea.

You can always just put a little milk in your tea and count the carbs if that is the only place you are missing it.

Milk tea where I live is ubiquitous, but I’m not a big fan. But I’ve recently discovered cheese tea. AMAZING! From what I can find online about it it is keto friendly. Not sure if carb counts but no nasty ingredients. It is a cream cheese based sauce with no sugar so if you request no sugar added to the tea it should be good. Since I’m not certain of the cream cheese mixture I just have it occasionally.

There is a great video i watched that talks exactly about the dairy subject;

recommend you to watch it and take for yourself the conclusions.
