Meter for Keto

(Kirk Daves) #1

I have been on the Keto diet since the 2nd of January of 2019. I have been averaging about 7 grams of carbs per day. I bought a Keto meter you blow in but it just registers 0.00 which says I am not in Keto. Do these meters work or did I just waste my money. I am down 8 pounds since the 2 of January. That’s what matters.

I am pretty sure blood ketone meters are the gold standard (sensing any ketones in the blood means ketosis).

Urine and breath (as far as I understand) measure excess ketones. So if you use what you create, they will come up zero.

The meters that register in that format “0.00” are breath alcohol meters designed for drinking and driving that have been re-branded for keto. Acetone is an alcohol, but it’s measured in PPM and meters like the Ketonix, KetoMeter and Levl are calibrated specifically to it. They’re also a lot more expensive. I had a Ketonix for a while and the only thing it told me was that my ketone levels had very little to do with weight loss which is why most people want to check. Same goes for blood, expensive and ultimately tells you nothing. If you’re doing keto specifically for a reason that requires high ketone levels so you’re in the therapeutic range it makes sense to test, other than that though, why waste your money? It can be handy for troubleshooting if specific things are kicking you out but also realize that our ketone levels are all over the place even when we’re doing everything right.

EXACTLY!
