I’ve been on keto diet for 2 weeks, lost 8 lbs. Always in the evening I have a mettalic taste in my mouth. This week I got a blood keto meter, the highest I’ve tested is .4. about an hour ago I tested .2 yet I have a strong mettalic taste…I’m guessing my body isn’t using ketones?
Metallic taste
A metallic taste can be a great indicator that you are in Ketosis - it’s from excessive acetone and will regulate more as your body becomes better adapted at using fat for fuel! Some people never register super high blood ketones, and that’s no problem. It sounds to me like you just need to keep the course and push through to keto-adaptation! It looks like you are on the right track!
At the start of my Keto journey, I had to stumble through blindly. I didn’t know about forums such as this, had no “keto” community and was only armed with the information I’d read in two books. When that metallic taste hit, I FREAKED OUT. Thought I was having a stroke or something. Jeez.
A couple of hours in, I’d done enough Googling to figure it out and a couple of weeks after that, the Keto diet started diminishing my anxiety, so no more freak outs when something new would come up.
Glad to have this place to bounce my experiences off of now. Glad all of us do.
Your body won’t utilize ketones for fuel until you are entirely fat adapted, that process can take upwards of 6 weeks to a few months, longer for some.
