Mental illness and keto

(Brandy Fischbach) #1

Hi All,

I’m new to this so I hope I do this right. LOL
I am on my 5th week of keto and have noticed in the past week that my mental health has taken a decline. I am more cranky, tired and moody. Has anyone else experienced this??

I’ve experienced just the opposite - significant improvements in my mental and physical health. You will frequently find references to sodium and magnesium intake to help clear a foggy mind.

Please tell us what you are eating, very detailed for the past few days. Of sodium and magnesium are not in your diet as sublime to then everyone will recommend those, the bottom line is that the foods you are now eating don’t have the amounts as the foods you consumed prior to Keto.

Overall my moods are trending better. I don’t experience blood sugar induced mood swings and PMS has lessened.

However, I do have the occasional angry days. I’ve attributed it to stored estrogen being released via fat loss.

I am supplementing my Magnesium and K2, but haven’t really supplemented my Sodium. I do drink bone broth on occasion or beef bouillon for added sodium. I usually do BPC for breakfast. I had sun-dried tomato chicken yesterday with a salad of just mixed greens, black olives and ranch for lunch. I had keto pork chops and cauliflower tots for dinner.

This may or may not be helpful, but here goes …
If you are used to literally swallowing your emotions, then the transition into fat adaptation / full keto may be a little bumpy. Keto changes your appetite so profoundly that you might get angry, but you just don’t have the capacity to eat enough for that anymore (swallow your anger).

Maybe you are coming down from a lifelong carb “high” as well. I also think your estrogen idea is a good one.

In my case, I’ve had some angry times as well. But mostly I’ve noticed that I’m much more even-tempered overall. Meaning that Keto isn’t going to take away your negative emotions to the point where you only ever feel happiness and bliss ever again. You’ll most likely just notice that the highs are not so high and the lows are not so low anymore. In other words, it’s more like the Teacups ride at Disney instead of the massive scary roller coaster.

Or not. I could be completely wrong.

Hope this helps.

Check the ingredients on the beef bouillon - to many chemicals for me, usually includes MSG.

To this I’d add that bone broth is really easy to make and so much better than store bought.

make sure you are getting enough electrolytes, a little supplementation with powders from the store, or hom e made keto ade, isnt a bad idea, give it a try

I’ve been doing some research and I think I may have just figured it out. I’ve been taking iodine supplementation for my thyroid. I just found out that iodine when taken with Lithium (which is what I am on) can actually reduce thyroid function. Many of these symptoms I am having could be due to low thyroid.

@Keigan, also, I’ve never found a bouillon that doesn’t contain Maltodextrin. Nasty stuff.

Holy cow!

“The truth is that maltodextrin can be considered a metabolism death food — it lacks nutritional value, and there are some pretty scary maltodextrin dangers to consider before opening up a bag of chips or baked goods, such as spiking blood sugar.”
