Megnesium supplement that doesnt make you poop?

(Heather Meyer) #1

Hey yall…

I couldnt find a thread in the search bar that answered my question so i will ask here. Does anyone know of a megnesium supplement that DOES not cause a laxative effect at a higher dose(600mg x1 day?) I currently take megnesium citrate which i dont mind but im only taking it because im not sure what other type of megnesium to take. I once tried Megnesium Oxide tablets but found them really hard on my stomach. Made me feel nausiated. Is there somthing in capsule form that is gentle and wont cause laxative effect in high dose?

Magnesium Glycinate is more gentle, and absorbable.

You could also use what I use, magnesium oil. I spray it on and rub it in.

I have used a ton of different Mgs. I have these at home:

And these:

However, I don’t use them. I use the spray instead.

Can you please clarify what it is about magnesium citrate that is not working well for you?

Glycinate seems to be working for me with no side effects (early days but so far so good). Citrate and Oxide work in terms of constipation but they make me pee a lot and deplete my potassium levels.

laxative effect occurs at 600mg

(Joey) #7

Interesting threshold. Have you tried spreading your ingestion throughout the day (perhaps, instead of a concentrated dose)?

Every evening before bed set aside 2 hours for a luxurious Epsom Salts bath in a candlelit bathroom, with classical music playing and a small clip on lamp so you can read a few chapters of your current favourite novel.

Epsom salts are magnesium sulphate. You can absorb magnesium through your skin. Can be done with a lower dose magnesium tablet.

Soak your feet in Epsom salts - you will absorb the magnesium and bypass the digestive tract.

eta: @FrankoBear great minds think alike!!!

Ah yes Jane. But when you drop your novel in a doze it may not turn into slightly salty papier-mâché

i typically dont…i find megnesium citrate makes me tired.

(Heather Meyer) #12

its worth a shot!

lol

One person’s ‘tired’ is another person’s ‘relaxed’

I’m swallowing/dosing 600mg elemental magnesium per day divided into two 300mg doses. That works out to be about 3600mg (3.6g) of daily magnesium citrate as a salt. No gut disturbance. And the fact that I have not reached the gut (laxative effect) tolerance, in itself, says that something is using up the magnesium I am inputting. It is a high dose because I’m weaning over to a more carnivorous ketogenic diet and that has created shedding of oxalates, which, in turn, can create magnesium depletion with symptoms of muscle cramps and heart palpitations.

I use ReMag. Here’s a link. If you read the description, it will explain why it bypasses the laxative effect. Especially if you follow instructions, and start slow and work up to your therapeutic dose.

PS: a couple of months, to save money, I tried the “copycat” version of ReMag, from Good State company. Nope. Even at double the dose, I am having a recurrence of symptoms. I guess sometimes you really do get what you pay for.

(Joey) #16

@PortHardy Ah, sounds like you are especially sensitive to magnesium - loose and tired  Perhaps you’re getting enough … so I guess now I’m wondering why do you believe you need more than 600mg/day?

I agree with those that said glycinate.
This is the one I use and HIGHLY recommend

im trying to follow the 500mg rule per day. Ive always felt deficiant because i did battle constipation my whole life and severe craving for chocolate all the time.

The constipation somehow balanced out(maybe through probiotics or cutting out foods im intolerent to) So i dont need the megnesium to help me go BUT(no pun intended) i find taking high doses of megnesium curbs the chocolate cravings. I now only crave chocolate at certain times in my cycle.

So im looking for a 600mg dose of megnesium that doesnt effect me in the bathroom but is absorbed well

(Joey) #19

Fascinating - I was unaware of the link some women experience between chocolate cravings and magnesium deficiency. Your reply prompted me to read a bit about it.

Thanks … I learned something new this morning!

Does that apply to men too?

Since I had magnesium threonate, I’ve started taking one tablet each night before bed. Only two nights, though. Got mixed results so far: one good night’s sleep, one less good.
