Hello I m new in keto since November 2017 I was wondering I’m taking magnesium b6 supplement and another laxative supplement and both contain sucrose … but I’m always testing my ketone level before and after and nthg change … I’m always 0.5 or 1.4 it depends morning after hitt and night … my question is I have to be aware of the sugar in the medicine ? But it’s hard to find something with erythnol or stevia … wht I have to do and btw I take lactase before anything dairy bcz I’m lactose intolerance so I have to avoid dairy ? Or it’s ok to have the lacta supplemnet ?
Medicine and sugars
I started Keto in September 2017 and take a number of supplements. I personally don’t factor-in the amount of sugar in them as I consider it too insignificant to make much of a difference to me.
I did track my macros carefully when I started, but for anything less than 1g of carbs I wasn’t that bothered. I’m more lazy about it now, but I’ve lost 7kg to date and still losing, so overall I’m happy with the progress and the effort required to achieve results.
Don’t sweat the small stuff
Thank uuuuu finally some1 replied
So I’ll continue with my supplement even they contain sucorose or maltodexine … and do u have any idea abt the krikland protein bar with erythinol ? I knw we can have erythinol but I need some1 tried it and didn’t have any negative effect …
No idea on how your body will react to the sweeteners in the protein bar. From what is on the front of the packet I’d guess you’d be ok, but you’d best measure your BG before and after to see if you get an insulin response from eating it or not to know how your body is handling it.
I do wonder how this will fit in with your daily macros? If you’re eating 21g of protein in this bar alone, you’d need to be finding around 60g of additional fat to keep your macros balanced out. Keto is a diet mostly of fat rather than protein. I often struggle to keep my fat up if I have a protein heavy meat like chicken. Now, if only Costco sold fat bombs!..
I’m 30 years I’m 120 lbs and 164 cm I usually eat 50g of total protein it means this protein bar and one piece of chicken equal 50 g not more and other calories are from fat like mct oil butter coconut … and max 20g as total of carbs like lettuce cucumber and vegetables and jownthis protein bar I have to count the net carbs too … it says 5 g of erythinol so I have to count it as net carb 5?
I’ll let someone else give a definitive answer on that one as it’s not something I’m greatly experienced in. I tend to stick with only unprocessed foods. If in doubt, as it’s only 5g, I’d count it.
Thanks for the stats. Given that your weight looks pretty good, what are you hoping to gain from the Keto way of eating? For me it’s good health and weight loss.
If you eat pure erythritol, you may not see a blood sugar spike, but due to the sweetness, you’ll likely provoke an insulin response for a pulse due to cephalic phase response. Half-life of insulin is between 2-3 minutes depending on your sensitivity. This is your brain getting your body ready to deal with eating a sugary sweet something. Once your pancreatic beta cells don’t detect sugar, they switch off secretion so you don’t go hypoglycemic.
If you take in protein you will have an insulin response. (mTOR will also detect it and you’ll turn off autophagy if you were in a fast) This will not be as much as sugar, but more than eating pure fat. This is normal and happens whenever you eat food. Even a ketogenic meal.
I’d offer for best results in this way of eating that you try to limit eating processed foodstuffs. You’ll find your body is happier eating things with maybe one or two things on the ingredients list.
I’m doing bcz I need the energy from keto and sure I want to lose weight but I’m not losing any weight I dnt knw why all I need it is 4 kilo but since November I didn’t … an from one week I started to not eat more than 1000 calories per day with keto I knw that keto u dnt count calories but maybe I’m a special case
There are many many ways to just lose weight but I really recommend an understanding of how the hormone insulin functions. That way you can begin to make informed decisions of what and when to eat that will help you get to your goal.
Dr Fung has many series of blog posts, I believe his largest are over 40, on just this topic. If you’re interested, begin here, hormonal obesity, part 1:

Eating just real food (produce, meat, dairy sections of the market, avoiding sugar), within a more limited time window (like only when the sun is up), while maintaining good sleep discipline (put blue light filters on your devices while the sun is down, making your bedroom dark and cool, maybe adding pink noise) will do wonders for your weight loss and will begin to heal what ails ya.
Looks like a single bar contain 22g of total carbs (the front of the wrapper states 3g net carbs)
I’ve heard 2 viewpoints on the type/level of daily carbs consumed on a keto diet. One viewpoint is total carbs, the other is viewpoint is net carbs. I’ve been targeting a maximum of 20 total daily carbs, and have been successfully losing weight.
Welcome Hala.
- Yes, you should try to be aware of sugar in medicines. Some medicines offer “sugar free” versions (i.e. cough drops), while others may not. If there is a choice, review the ingredients list to see if one is better than another for you.
- It is my understanding that Ketone levels in your body will normally vary thru-out the day, so you may get different readings in the morning and in the evening. Not sure if you are looking to measure the reaction within your body from various foods & exercises, if so measurement of blood glucose levels may be more appropriate. When I measure blood ketone levels, I do it first thing in the morning after I wake up before I eat or drink anything. I think this is the best way to get consistent measurement across multiple days.
- Wrt “bcz I’m lactose intolerance”, do you realize that various dairy products contain lactose, and lactose is a sugar (i.e. a carbohydrate)? Products like regular milk, 2% and 1% milk are not recommended on the keto diet because they contain lactose. Heavy whipping cream and cheeses are OK (to an extent). Avoiding the dairy products may eliminate your need to take lactase.
