How to adjust the thought processes of those around us?

(Amy Schott) #2

I am a Nurse Practitioner who “saw the light” about 18 months ago.
I see many obese, severely obese, non-diabetic and diabetic patients.
I am often afraid or discouraged to send them to the dietician because I know what main stream is telling them.
I need written handouts, something, to show them the way to Keto.
I have had several successes but with Hippa, can’t exactly share too much.

Thanks! Amy

With evidence

It’s hard to introduce reason and evidence in the face of dogma. Unless they are open-minded and genuinely curious, people are not receptive to learning much. Education is a pull, not a push.

Keto on and help those who seek it.

You could tell them to come here and tell their stories if they want.

As well, you can tell the story as long as it can’t be tracked back to a patient (ie. cant use names, etc.).

I work in home health, so to a certain extent I see the problem at the source. I am not a nutritionist, but I do encourage people to cut back on the carbs as much as they can. Dialysis and other chronic situations make the whole food situation just a little dodgy as far as electrolytes etc.

Curious, what is the best result you have seen with a dialysis T2 patient? Is it too late for them at this point?

I became a fan of the Obesity Medicine Association after seeing the interview Dr. Eenfeldt did with Dr. Mary Vernon, who was its president at the time. She was succeeded by Dr. Westman. They stress trying to find solutions short of surgery, even though they used to be called the Association of Bariatric Surgeons, and with people like doctors Vernon and Westman in charge, you know they are very keto-friendly.

I tell patients that I’m changing their diet to a modified Mediterranean diet with healthy fats. We are lucky to have people near us who do keto work so I politely recommend them whilst I monitor them. We turn it in to a team effort and take small steps introducing the keto vocabulary :joy:. We got the idea from Dr Rod Taylor of Low Carb Down Under.

What I’d like be to see though I’d more local support groups but it’s hard in the country. Which is why this forum is so great.

Win arguments by actions (results) rather than words. You can not combat someone’s opinion.
Rather win them over by your actions and results. This will save you a lot of unwarranted headaches and strain on relationships.

Good and wise words, Ernest. I think it’s an exciting time, even with large profit-motivated forces trying to hold things back.

Medical professional or not, we all come to new acceptance in our own time. There’s quite a groundswell now, and it’s growing. Whether it becomes a “tidal wave” or not, I bet that we see profound changes in the next couple decades. I look forward to the day when the “voices in the wilderness” will be the diminishing, hardcore holdouts, most of them motivated by monetary interest.
