So I’m curious as to how much meat and eggs and animal foods is actually absorbed and how much I’d waste. Convention says meat is hard to digest and bad for you. Keto says meat has the best absorption. And while I’m on keto my bowel movements have become far fsr less frequent. But they are never hard to pass. I’ve been super stressed about this because I have IBS but is this normal? Like its sparatic I can go two days I a row then skip 3 then go 1 then skip 1 then go 2 then 2 skip 2 etc etc etc. I only eat twice a day 3 times on weekend and I eat far less calories than I ever have. So is it just a state of more is being absorbed then wasted? Or do I need to tweak and maybe find some help on this? I’ve tried literally everything hH
Meat absorption
Apparently so. If you’re not getting a lot of fibre you’re not going to produce a lot of waste.
This is perfectly normal. My bowel movements vary in the same way. If your IBS is not acting up from your eating this way, then keep up the good work. There are many people on these forums who report that their IBS has been almost completely asymptomatic, since they started eating ketogenically.
Interestingly, part of the reason that fibre is supposed to be good for us is that it gets turned into a chemical called butyrate by some of our gut bacteria, and butyrate is very good for the bowel lining. One of the principal ketone bodies is, of course, β-hydroxybutyrate, which is very similar in structure and equally healthful for the bowel.
BTW, if you should happen to experience constipation on your ketogenic diet, it is almost invariably the result of not eating enough salt. The healthy range is 10-15 grams a day, including the salt in your food. Don’t overdo the salt, either, because the result is a situation very much the opposite of constipation, lol!
It also helps to drink to thirst. Not to a predetermined target, however—because that risks losing electrolytes and becoming over hydrated, which can land you in the hospital, or worse.
Dr. Berry talks about that in one of his videos, no idea which one. He said that he has a few patients that use a colostomy bag. He says that those patients have no issues with eating all the meat they want but they have to be a little more careful about not overdoing the veg / fibrous stuff since that’s apparently what will cause the big bulk in the waste output.
If a person is healthy, meat is digested quite fully with not a lot left over to be eliminated as waste. So the old tale about 5 pounds of undigested red meat in the colon of the average 60 year old male is just a tale, not a fact.
Hopefully, someone will be along with the actual video so you can see it for yourself.
In January this year I ate only beef for a month… didn’t poo for 10 days at first. I’ll freely admit I was getting a bit worried so took some magnesium citrate which had its usual effect the following morning when I produced one completely normal size poo that I used to do daily. The wastage from beef consumption is tiny.
There are also many anecdotal stories about IBS clearing up completely on carnivore… it’s almost magical.
